Chapter 7 - Bringing Home My True Family

One week later, Mount Sinai Hospital cleared Maya and baby Liam for discharge.

The nightmare that had begun on New Year’s Eve was finally giving way to peace. Maya’s infection was completely cured, her wound was healing cleanly, and Liam had gained nearly a pound of healthy weight under the care of the pediatric nurses.

I drove them home in a brand-new, top-rated security SUV I had purchased during their hospital stay.

We didn't go back to the old apartment—the place was filled with too many toxic memories. Instead, I had bought a magnificent, sunlit four-bedroom brownstone in Brooklyn Heights overlooking the river, fully furnished and secured with top-of-the-line private monitoring systems.

I carried Maya across the threshold of our new home, while a professional private nurse—whom I had hired full-time to assist Maya during her recovery—carried Liam inside.

The brownstone was warm, quiet, and filled with the scent of fresh flowers, hot chicken soup, and clean baby linen. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, casting golden light across the hardwood floors.

Maya sat down on the comfortable plush sofa, a soft velvet blanket draped over her shoulders, holding Liam securely against her chest. Tears filled her eyes, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming relief and joy.

“It’s so warm here, David,” she whispered, looking around the peaceful living room. “It feels like a dream.”

I knelt beside her on the rug, wrapping my arms around both of them, resting my forehead gently against hers.

“This is your real home, Maya,” I said softly. “No monsters. No fear. No cruelty. Just you, me, and our son.”

She leaned into my touch, letting out a long, shuddering breath that released months of hidden anxiety.

“What about your mother and sister?” she asked softly. “Are you really okay with letting them go to prison?”

I looked down at our son, who opened his deep blue eyes and let out a tiny, contented sigh in his mother’s arms.

“A mother is someone who protects, loves, and builds up her child,” I said gently. “My mother tried to destroy my family. You are the mother of this house, Maya. You are my true family. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure you and Liam are surrounded only by love.”
