Chapter 5 - The Armor of the Law

By Friday afternoon, the cozy illusion of our suburban life had been entirely dismantled and replaced by the harsh, unyielding mechanics of the legal and criminal justice systems.

Sarah was resting in the guest bedroom of Christopher’s house across town. We had decided it wasn't safe for her to return to our house until the police finished their forensic sweep and until we figured out where Melissa and her accomplices were hiding. My brother had turned his home into a fortress—motion-activated cameras on the perimeter, smart locks on every door, and a private security detail parked down the street.

I sat across from Christopher in his home office, surrounded by stacks of financial statements, bank subpoenas, and digital forensic reports that his tech investigator had pulled overnight.

"The U.S. Attorney’s office is already looking into Vaughn’s financial records," Christopher said, sliding a thick document across the desk. "Turns out Dr. Adrian Vaughn isn't just a high-end surgeon in Chicago. He’s the front man for a massive medical kickback and embezzlement scheme involving several private healthcare clinics across the Midwest."

"And Melissa?" I asked, staring at a photograph of my wife smiling beside Vaughn at a charity dinner three months ago. I had been out of town on business that weekend, too. She had told me she was visiting her mother in Connecticut.

"Melissa was acting as a financial consultant for Vaughn’s private foundation," Christopher said quietly. "She was laundering the money through dummy publishing accounts. But something went wrong. A week ago, she tried to back out. She wanted a bigger cut, or she threatened to walk away."

I felt a cold dread settle in the pit of my stomach. "What does that have to do with Sarah?"

"Everything," Christopher said grimly. "Last night, Vaughn and Melissa had a confrontation at your house. Sarah woke up and walked out into the hallway. She saw something she shouldn't have seen. Or worse... Melissa tried to take Sarah with her, and someone—either Melissa or Vaughn—lost control."

My vision blurred with a hot, blinding rage. "They hit her. They hit an eight-year-old child."

"The medical report confirms the bruising matches a heavy signet ring," Christopher said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "Vaughn wears a gold signet ring with his family crest on his right hand. Your neighbor Carolyn didn't just find a scared little girl in the driveway, Jamie. She found a witness who survived an attempt to silence her."

Before I could answer, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

I answered immediately, hitting speaker. "Hello?"

"Mr. Sherwood," a smooth, cultured voice said on the other end. It sounded like a man who spent his life in expensive boardrooms and operating rooms. "I believe you have something of mine."

I froze. "Adrian Vaughn."

"Let's not be dramatic, James," Vaughn replied calmly, as if we were discussing a golf reservation. "Your wife made some poor choices. She took documents that do not belong to her. You want your family back, and I want my paperwork. Let's arrange a meeting. Tonight. Midnight. Abandoned warehouse off Route 10. Bring the flash drive from the attic, and bring your daughter’s silence. Do that, and Melissa walks back into your life."

"And if I don't?" I asked, my voice shaking with fury.

"Then you’ll never see your wife again," Vaughn said softly. "And the next time someone visits your daughter, it won't just leave a bruise."
