Chapter 9 - The Trap is Sprung

The heavy steel door of the warehouse basement burst open a second later—not with the sound of federal marshals, but with the wail of sirens drawing up right outside the loading bay.

Half a dozen local police officers, led by the precinct captain we had briefed two hours earlier, flooded the room with tactical flashlights drawn.

"Nobody move! Stay down!"

Vaughn was still on his knees, trembling and babbling incoherently about his constitutional rights and his legal team, while an officer zip-tied his hands behind his back.

Norma was cursing under her breath, her face pale with fury as she was hauled to her feet.

I ignored them both. I walked straight past the chaos, knelt down beside Melissa, and used my pocketknife to slice through the plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.

She rubbed her raw skin, her eyes swimming with tears as she looked up at me. "Jamie... I’m so sorry. I didn't want any of this. I swear I didn't want him to hurt Sarah."

"You stayed silent, Melissa," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "You let your mother and your lover terrorize an eight-year-old child to protect your bank accounts. We are done."

She reached out to grab my sleeve, but I stepped back, standing up tall as the police officers pulled her to her feet to question her about the financial laundering scheme.

As they led Vaughn, Norma, and Melissa out into the cold rain in handcuffs, Christopher walked up beside me, wiping a streak of concrete dust off his shoulder.

"Well," Christopher said quietly, watching the taillights of the squad cars fade into the night. "That’s one way to handle family Thanksgiving."

I let out a long, shuddering breath that felt like I was expelling ten years of poison. "Is it over?"

"The legal battle is just beginning," Christopher said, clapping a hand on my shoulder. "Vaughn’s empire is toast. Norma is going away for conspiracy and accessory. And Melissa is facing federal fraud and child endangerment charges. They’ll never be able to touch Sarah again."
