Chapter 4 - Shadows and Poisoned Formulas

Three days passed like a military operation inside the Rossi estate.
Leo was thriving. Under Hunter’s constant care, the color had returned to his cheeks, his weight was climbing steadily back toward the charts, and the relentless, mechanical screaming that had haunted the nursery had been replaced by the soft, contented coos of a healthy infant.
For Lorenzo, the transformation was nothing short of miraculous. He spent hours sitting in the corner of the master suite, watching Hunter feed his son with a quiet, fierce dedication that commanded absolute respect from every guard and servant in the house.
Yet, beneath the fragile peace of the upper floors, dark currents were moving through the syndicate.
In the subterranean kitchens of the estate, far away from the polished marble and crystal chandeliers, Dr. Gallagher sat at a stainless steel table, nervously tapping a silver pen against a confidential medical log.
The door hissed open, and Victor Rossi—Lorenzo’s cousin and second-in-command—stepped into the room, his tailored gray suit immaculate, a dark scowl etched across his sharp, predatory features.
“Tell me the boy is dead,” Victor demanded, closing the door behind him and locking it with a heavy mechanical click.
Gallagher jumped, nearly dropping his pen. “He’s... he’s not dead, Mr. Rossi. In fact, he’s recovering at an astonishing rate.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. “Recovering? That's impossible. The chemical formula we had you administer to his donor milk was designed to mimic a fatal metabolic collapse. It should have shut his organs down within fourteen days.”
“It was working,” Gallagher stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “Until that new maid—the one from the third-floor service staff—intervened three nights ago. She’s... she’s breastfeeding him, Mr. Rossi. Directly. She bypassed all our contaminated formulas entirely.”
Victor slammed his fist onto the stainless steel table, the metal ringing like a gunshot. “A maid? An anonymous nobody just waltzes into the most secure nursery on the eastern seaboard and undoes six months of careful planning?”
“Lorenzo has placed her in the master suite,” Gallagher whispered, his voice trembling with panic. “She has armed guards stationed outside her door twenty-four hours a day. If Lorenzo finds out that the infant's failing health wasn't a natural tragedy, but a slow-acting poison administered under his own roof...”
“He won't find out,” Victor interrupted, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal monotone. “Because before the week is out, both the brat and the maid are going to suffer a fatal accident.”
“An accident? Victor, Lorenzo has eyes everywhere—!”

“Then we make it look like a medical relapse,” Victor said, a wicked, calculating smile spreading across his face. He reached into his coat pocket and slid a small, unlabeled glass vial across the table toward the doctor. “A secondary compound. Completely untraceable in standard toxicology screens, designed to induce cardiac arrest within thirty minutes. You’re going to find a way to get it into the master suite before midnight.”
Gallagher stared at the glass vial on the table as if it were a live grenade. He knew that if he refused, Victor would kill him where he sat. And he knew that if he tried and failed, Lorenzo would skin him alive.
