Chapter 6 - The Belle Meade Arrest

The Belle Meade Country Club was situated on three hundred acres of manicured rolling hills, marble fountains, and private golf courses in Nashville’s most exclusive neighborhood.

It was 4:30 p.m.

Inside the main dining room, beneath crystal chandeliers and silver tea sets, Madeline Vance sat at a corner table surrounded by six of her high-society friends. She was wearing a fresh navy blue dress, sipping a glass of expensive chilled prosecco, laughing as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened that day.

“I’m telling you, darling,” Madeline chuckled, casually adjusting her pearl necklace. “Brandon will come to his senses by tomorrow morning. That low-class girl has completely ruined his life. It’s about time someone took control of the family.”

Before her friend could reply, the grand double oak doors of the dining room were slammed open with a deafening crash.

Four uniformed Nashville police officers stepped into the room, followed by Detective Sarah Miller and Brandon.

The clinking of silverware stopped instantly. The entire country club fell dead silent as fifty wealthy patrons turned to stare at the police squad entering the dining hall.

Madeline’s smile froze. She set her prosecco glass down on the white tablecloth, her eyes narrowing as she saw her son standing beside the lead detective.

“Brandon?” Madeline said, her voice dripping with artificial annoyance as she stood up. “What is the meaning of this theater? You brought police officers to my club? Have you completely lost your mind?”

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling the arrest warrant from her jacket.

“Madeline Vance,” Detective Miller announced in a voice that carried to every corner of the room. “You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, felony child abuse, and intentional contamination of food.”

Gasps erupted across the dining tables. Madeline’s friends recoiled, staring at her in shock.

Madeline’s face flushed red, her eyes burning with rage. “Attempted murder?! Are you insane?! I am a Vance! My late husband built half of this city! How dare you level such disgusting lies at me in public!”

“It’s over, Mom,” Brandon said, stepping closer to her table. His voice was dead, devoid of any warmth or filial affection. “We have the video.”

Madeline blinked, a subtle twitch appearing at the corner of her left eye. “What video?”

“The kitchen security camera in my pantry,” Brandon revealed, leaning over the table until his eyes were inches from hers. “We saw you put six drops of digitalis into the blackberry preserve. We watched you stir it. We watched you try to murder my four-year-old son.”

For the first time in her life, the color drained entirely from Madeline’s face. The arrogant composure she had maintained for decades collapsed in an instant, leaving behind the pale, terrified face of a trapped predator.

“Brandon… no… you don't understand,” Madeline stammered, her voice dropping into a frantic whisper as she reached out to grab his sleeve. “I did it for you! She was going to ruin you! She was going to take your inheritance!”

Brandon pulled his arm away as if her hand were covered in acid.

“Do not touch me,” Brandon spat. “You are no longer my mother. You will never see Luke again. You will spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a prison cell.”

Detective Miller stepped in, grabbing Madeline’s wrists and pulling them behind her back.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped tight around Madeline’s wrists.

“Madeline Vance, you have the right to remain silent,” Detective Miller read aloud as she escorted the crying, protesting woman out of the country club in front of all her peers. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…”
