Chapter 7 - The Paternity Revelation

At 8:00 p.m., I was sitting beside Luke’s bed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The color had finally returned to his sweet cheeks. The IV line was still hooked to his arm, pumping protective fluids into his body, but his breathing was deep, steady, and natural. His tiny fingers were wrapped tightly around my index finger even in his sleep.
The door to the room opened quietly, and Brandon stepped inside.
He looked exhausted, his shirt wrinkled, his hair messy, but the heavy dark cloud that had hung over his face all day had finally cleared. He walked over to the bed, bent down, and kissed the top of Luke’s head before putting his arm around my shoulders.
“How is he?” Brandon whispered.
“The doctor said the digitalis is completely flushed from his system,” I smiled through my tears. “He’s going to make a full recovery, Brandon. No heart damage. Nothing.”
Brandon let out a long, shuddering breath, burying his face in my hair as he held me tight. “Thank God. Thank God.”
A quiet knock came at the door. Detective Miller stepped inside, holding a sealed white envelope from the hospital’s genetic testing laboratory.
“The expedited results came back from the state lab,” Detective Miller said, handing the envelope to Brandon. “I thought you’d want to open this yourselves.”
Brandon took the envelope. He didn't even hesitate. He ripped it open and pulled out the legal laboratory certificate.
He read the bold print at the bottom out loud:
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.999% RESULT: BRANDON VANCE IS CONFIRMED AS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF LUKE VANCE.
Tears spilled from Brandon’s eyes, dropping onto the white paper. He had never doubted me for a single second, but seeing the legal proof—and knowing that his mother’s vicious lies had been completely destroyed—brought a profound sense of justice.
“There’s one more thing,” Detective Miller added, her tone becoming serious. “During her interrogation at the station, Madeline’s defense attorney tried to argue that she was suffering from a mental break. But we executed a search warrant on her estate an hour ago.”
“What did you find?” I asked.
“In her private safe,” Detective Miller revealed, “we found a forged paternity document dated three years ago. She had hired a disreputable private investigator to create a fake lab report showing Luke was not Brandon’s son. She was planning to use it in court to break up your marriage and petition for sole guardianship of Luke so she could control Brandon’s family trust.”

Brandon shook his head in utter disgust. “It was always about control. She couldn't handle the fact that I loved Clara more than I feared her.”
“She’s being held without bail at the Davidson County Detention Center,” Detective Miller said firmly. “With the video footage, the toxicological reports, and the fake documents, she is looking at twenty to thirty years in federal prison.”
