Chapter 9 - Ashes and Vengeance

The trial of Richard Vance lasted exactly four days.
With an airtight mountain of forensic financial records, encrypted communication logs, and sworn testimony from federal investigators, the defense didn't even attempt to contest the charges. It wasn't just a corporate trial; it was the public dismantling of a shadow syndicate that had infiltrated the upper echelons of American finance for over a decade.
On a cold Friday morning in November—exactly one year to the day since Laney had received the warning that forced her into exile—Asher stood on the balcony of his Manhattan penthouse, looking down at the courthouse steps below through a pair of high-powered binoculars.
He watched as Richard Vance, handcuffed, shackled, and wearing an orange federal jumpsuit, was led out of a side exit and bundled into an armored transport van. Vance didn't look up. His head was bowed, his spirit completely crushed by the realization that his wealth, his influence, and his freedom had been entirely obliterated by the man he had tried to destroy.
Asher lowered the binoculars, setting them quietly on the wrought-iron railing.
He felt no triumph. He felt no anger.
There was only a profound, crystalline clarity.
Footsteps approached from behind, soft and familiar. A pair of warm arms wrapped around his waist from behind, resting against his chest, and a familiar cheek pressed gently against his shoulder blade.
"Is it over?" Laney asked softly.
Asher turned around in her embrace, wrapping his arms securely around her shoulders. He looked down into her warm, expressive eyes, seeing no trace of the fear and exhaustion that had haunted her for months.
"It's over," Asher confirmed, his voice steady and warm. "Vance is gone. The syndicate is dust. The past is officially dead."
Laney let out a long breath, closing her eyes as she leaned into his embrace. "Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night, expecting to hear someone at the door, expecting to have to run again."
Asher cupped her face in his hands, lifting her chin so she had no choice but to meet his gaze.
"You never have to run again," Asher vowed, every word a sacred oath. "You are home, Laney. And nobody on this earth will ever lay a finger on you or our children while I still draw breath."

She smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She stood on her tiptoes, pressing a deep, passionate kiss to his lips.
"I know, billionaire," she whispered against his mouth. "I know."
