Chapter 4 - The Bride’s Masquerade

The east wing study was bathed in the warm, golden glow of antique crystal wall sconces. A magnificent bouquet of white lilies—chosen for the upcoming wedding—sat in a tall crystal vase on the mahogany conference table, filling the room with a sweet, heavy fragrance that masked the underlying tension.
Claire Bennett sat gracefully in a high-backed leather armchair, wearing a silk morning robe over her designer nightwear. Her blonde hair fell in soft, perfect waves around her shoulders, and her face wore an expression of mild, polite annoyance.
"Dominic, really," Claire said, crossing her legs and looking up as the heavy oak doors swung open. "It’s barely six o'clock in the morning. Couldn't this wedding planning wait until breakfast? The caterers aren't even scheduled to arrive until noon."
Dominic did not answer right away. He walked slowly into the center of the room, his long dark coat sweeping behind him, his boots clicking rhythmically against the polished hardwood floor. He pulled out the chair directly opposite her, sat down, and placed the black leather ledger squarely in the middle of the table.
Claire’s eyes flicked down to the ledger. For a fraction of a second, her pristine composure faltered, a tiny tremor rippling through the corner of her lip. But she forced a light, dismissive laugh.
"What is that? Are these the seating arrangements?" she asked, tilting her head with practiced innocence. "You look terribly serious, darling. Did something happen at the docks?"
"Open it, Claire," Dominic said softly.
She hesitated, then slowly reached across the table and flipped the cover back. The first page displayed her own signature authorizing a multi-million-dollar real estate transfer to a Vanguard Holdings account, countersigned by Nathan Cross.
Claire stared at the page for three long seconds. Then, with a sudden, dramatic flourish, she pushed the book away and stood up, her face flushing with righteous indignation.
"This is absurd!" she snapped, her voice rising sharply. "Where did you get this trash? Some rival syndicate trying to sabotage our wedding? Or did one of your dirty street thugs fabricate these documents to ruin me?"
"Nathan already confessed," Dominic lied smoothly, watching her face for the slightest micro-expression.
The lie hit its mark like a physical blow. Claire’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"Nathan... confessed?" she whispered, her voice losing all its aristocratic poise.
"He told me everything," Dominic continued, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "How you planned the takeover from the beginning. How you used the wedding as a legal Trojan horse to drain the Vale trust. And how you dragged Mia Carter down to the cellar and locked her in the dark because she saw you printing these exact financial statements on the study printer."
Claire backed away from the table until her legs hit the edge of the leather armchair. She was shaking now, her hands clutching the lapels of her silk robe as the reality of her exposure set in with terrifying finality.
"You don't understand, Dominic," she pleaded, her voice dropping into a desperate, weeping whimper as she sank back down onto her knees beside his chair, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "Nathan forced me! He threatened my family, he said if I didn't help him infiltrate your estate, he would—"
Dominic looked down at her hand clutching his sleeve. Slowly, deliberately, he peeled her fingers away and stood up to his full height.
"You didn't look threatened when you poured the poison in my wine three months ago," Dominic said, his voice cutting through her sobs like a razor.
Claire froze. Her crying stopped instantly. She looked up at him, her face completely drained of color.
"How... how did you know about the wine?" she whispered, the last of her defenses crumbling into dust.
"I didn't," Dominic replied coldly, turning his back to her. "Until just now. But thank you for confirming it."
He walked toward the double doors, pulling open the heavy wood.
Daniel stood in the hallway, flanked by two armed guards.

"Take Miss Bennett to the east holding room," Dominic ordered without looking back. "Keep her secure. When the federal marshals arrive this afternoon to pick up Nathan, they can take her as well. Let the state prosecutors decide how much prison time a traitorous bride receives."
"No! Dominic, please!" Claire screamed as Daniel and the guards stepped forward, grabbing her arms and dragging her out of the study, her expensive silk robe trailing across the hardwood floor until the heavy doors shut, silencing her cries entirely.
