Chapter 6 - The Cleansing Fire

By noon, the estate grounds looked like a staging ground for a federal investigation.
Three black federal transport vans sat parked in the sweeping circular driveway, their engines idling quietly in the cold air. Two teams of federal marshals—operating under a special counter-intelligence jurisdiction that Dominic commanded through his legal holdings—escorted Nathan Cross and Claire Bennett out of the side entrance of the mansion.
Both were handcuffed, wearing heavy winter coats to hide their bindings, their heads bowed against the flashing lights of investigative cameras and the biting wind off the Hudson.
Nathan didn't look up as he was pushed into the back of the transport van. But as Claire passed near the grand stone steps where Dominic stood watching from the doorway, she stopped for a fraction of a second, her eyes locking onto him with a bitter, defeated glare.
"You think you've won, Dominic," Claire hissed quietly as a marshal nudged her forward. "The Moretti syndicate won't stop just because Nathan and I failed. They own half the judges in Manhattan. You're fighting a war you've already lost."
"Let them come," Dominic replied, his voice cold, steady, and lethal. "I built this empire out of blood and stone long before you ever learned how to hold a champagne glass. If they want it, tell them to come and try to take it from my hands."
The van doors slammed shut with a heavy, echoing thud.
The convoy pulled away down the private estate road, disappearing around the bend of snow-covered pine trees until the sound of their engines faded completely into the winter silence.
Dominic turned around and walked back inside the mansion.
The atmosphere in the grand hall was completely transformed. The heavy, oppressive tension that had hung over the corridors for months—poisoned by Nathan’s quiet sabotage and Claire’s superficial ambition—was gone. The staff moved with renewed purpose and genuine relief, whispering quietly among themselves as they began the massive task of stripping away every trace of the cancelled wedding decorations.
Upstairs in the master wing, Mia and Harper had been moved into the sunlit family suites overlooking the private gardens.
Dominic walked up the marble stairs, removing his suit jacket and tossing it over a chair as he entered the open-concept study connecting to the suites.
Daniel was waiting for him by the desk, holding a fresh stack of operational manifests.
"The federal warrants have been executed across all of Nathan’s offshore accounts," Daniel reported crisply. "Every cent he skimmed has been seized and rerouted back into the Vale trust. Furthermore, our intelligence units in New Jersey report that the Moretti captains are pulling back their perimeter guards. They know their infiltration was completely exposed."
"Good," Dominic said, walking over to the sideboard to pour a glass of bourbon. "Keep our security doubled for the next month. I don't want any surprises."
"Will do, Boss," Daniel paused, a faint, knowing smirk touching his lips. "Also... Martha and the kitchen staff wanted to know if Mia and Harper will be joining us for dinner in the main dining hall tonight."
May you like
Dominic took a slow sip of his bourbon, looking out the large window toward the sunlit gardens where a little girl in a yellow nightgown was currently chasing a golden retriever through the snow.
"Tell Martha to set three places at the head of the table," Dominic said quietly. "Mia isn't managing the housekeeping staff anymore. From now on, she sits beside me."
