Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Mansion

By the end of the week, the east wing of the Kwon estate had transformed into something the staff barely recognized.
The heavy velvet drapes that had kept the nursery in perpetual twilight were pulled back, allowing bright spring sunlight to flood across the hardwood floors. The silent, sterile halls were now filled with the sound of cheerful toddler music, pitter-pattering feet, and constant, bubbling laughter.
Under Maya’s watchful eye, Caleb and Connor were changing rapidly. They were eating three full meals a day—mostly because Lily sat at her high chair between them, dramatically demonstrating how to eat peas ("Open big, like a hippopotamus!").
The boys, who had refused to be touched by twelve professional nannies, now crawled after Lily like ducklings following their mother. If Lily went to the playroom, Caleb and Connor army-crawled behind her. If Lily clapped her hands, Connor clapped his. If Lily took a nap, Caleb laid his head down on his pillow without a single tear.
Maya sat on the soft play mat, watching the three children stack colorful foam blocks, when the heavy nursery doors swung open.
It wasn't Evan.
A tall, impeccably dressed woman in her late fifties stepped into the room. She wore a tailored cream Chanel suit, three strands of South Sea pearls, and an expression of profound disgust. Behind her trailed Miles Choi, looking deeply uncomfortable.
This was Eleanor Vance—Grace’s mother, and the grandmother of the twins.
"What is the meaning of this noise?" Eleanor demanded, her sharp voice slicing through the playful atmosphere. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes landing on Lily, who was currently giggling as Caleb attempted to put a red plastic bowl on his own head.
Eleanor’s face contorted. "Miles! Who is this child? And why is she touching my daughter's babies?"
Maya stood up calmly, smoothing down her clean cotton shirt. "Good afternoon. I’m Maya Brooks, the head childcare specialist. And this is my daughter, Lily."
Eleanor pulled out a jewel-encrusted pair of reading glasses, holding them to her eyes as she inspected Maya from head to toe.
"Childcare specialist?" Eleanor sneered, her tone dripping with venom. "You look like a domestic servant. Miles, where is the agency nanny Evan promised to hire? Why is a common maid’s street child playing with the heirs to the Kwon foundation?"
Lily stopped playing. Sensing the hostile energy, she walked over and wrapped her tiny arms around Maya’s leg, hiding her face in Maya’s trousers. Connor immediately let out a small, anxious whimper, sensing the shift in the room.
"Mrs. Vance," Miles said carefully, stepping forward. "Mr. Kwon personally hired Miss Brooks. Her presence has been... exceptionally beneficial for the boys."
"Beneficial?!" Eleanor scoffed, walking toward Caleb’s crib and waving her hand dismissively at Maya. "It is an absolute disgrace! My daughter Grace raised money for elite orphanages, and now her children are being raised by a girl from the slums! Look at this room! It looks like a daycare center!"
"Mrs. Vance," Maya said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. "I suggest you check your tone in front of these children."
Eleanor turned on her, her eyes flashing with aristocratic fury. "How dare you speak to me! I am Eleanor Vance! My family built the hospital wing where those boys were born! You are an employee—a temporary, disposable piece of staff! I will have Evan throw you and your bastard child onto the street before sunset!"
"She isn't throwing anyone out, Eleanor."
The deep, commanding voice echoed from the doorway.
Evan stood in the entrance, wearing a dark blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His suit jacket was gone, and his tie was loosened. He had just returned from a board meeting, but his eyes were fixed entirely on his mother-in-law.
Eleanor turned, adjusting her pearls. "Evan! Thank God you’re here. Look at what this house has turned into! You’ve allowed a low-class maid to occupy Grace’s nursery! She has her child sharing toys with Caleb and Connor! The hygiene risks alone—"
"Eleanor," Evan interrupted, stepping into the room. He didn't look angry; he looked colder than ice. "Leave."
Eleanor blinked, astonished. "What?"
"Leave my house," Evan repeated softly. "You have visited my sons three times in eighteen months. Each time, you spent five minutes complaining about the noise before going to your country club. Maya has given my sons more peace in five days than you have in their entire lives."
Eleanor’s face turned bright red. "Evan! Grace would be horrified by this!"
At the mention of Grace’s name, a visible tremor passed through Evan’s jaw. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
"Do not use my wife's name to justify your arrogance," Evan said, his voice dropping so low it sent a chill through the room. "If you ever speak to Miss Brooks or her daughter like that again, I will personally revoke your access to the family trust, and you will never see Caleb and Connor again. Am I making myself clear?"
Eleanor gasped, her lips trembling with outrage. She looked at Evan, then at Maya, who stood her ground with unflinching dignity, and finally at the twins, who were watching their father with wide, curious eyes.
Without another word, Eleanor turned on her heel and swept out of the room, her designer heels clicking furiously against the floor.
Silence fell over the nursery.
Evan stood near the center of the room, his chest rising and falling slowly as he fought to regain his composure.
Maya looked at him. For the first time, she didn't just see a cold billionaire. She saw a man standing in the ruins of his life, fighting fiercely to protect the tiny bit of light he had left.
Lily peeked out from behind Maya’s leg. She looked at Evan, picked up her plastic triceratops from the rug, walked slowly across the floor, and held it out toward the terrifying tycoon.
"Dino say..." Lily whispered softly, "...thank you, mister."
May you like
Evan looked down at the tiny girl. Slowly, agonizingly, he knelt down on one knee on the Persian rug. He reached out his large, calloused hand, and with surprising gentleness, took the small plastic toy.
"You're welcome, Lily," Evan murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
