Chapter 6 - Sabotage and Conspiracy

The newfound peace inside the Kwon estate lasted for two months, but outside its iron gates, dark clouds were gathering.
Grace’s younger brother, Julian Vance, was a man drowning in debt. Having squandered his share of the family inheritance on failed offshore investments and high-stakes gambling in Macau, Julian relied heavily on the multi-million-dollar annual allowance provided by the Kwon-Vance Family Trust—a trust controlled exclusively by the legal guardians of Caleb and Connor.
With Evan regaining his emotional footing and Maya firmly managing the household, Julian realized his chances of gaining temporary custody or accessing the trust funds were slipping away completely.
In late May, a new temp staff member was brought in to assist with the estate’s heavy summer cleaning—a quiet woman named Brenda, hired through an external agency that Julian secretly funded.
It was a hot Tuesday afternoon. Maya was in the kitchen, preparing a batch of fresh apple puree for the toddlers. Lily was sitting at the low breakfast island, coloring in a picture book, while Brenda wiped down the stainless-steel countertops nearby.
"I can take those bowls up to the nursery for you, Miss Brooks," Brenda offered, her voice sweet and helpful. "You’ve been on your feet all morning."
Maya paused, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. She looked at the three small porcelain bowls on the counter. "Oh, thank you, Brenda. That's very kind of you."
Brenda smiled, picked up the tray, and walked toward the service elevator.
Maya turned back to the sink, but as she rinsed a measuring cup, something flickered in her mind. Back in her old neighborhood, survival depended on paying attention to details most people missed.
Maya had noticed that Brenda always wore long sleeves, even in the humid kitchen, and her hands were rough—not like a professional house cleaner, but like someone who worked with chemicals. More importantly, when Brenda had picked up the tray, Maya had noticed a small, clear glass vial tucked into her apron pocket.
Maya’s blood ran cold.
"Lily, stay right here," Maya commanded sharply, dropping her towel and sprinting out of the kitchen toward the service stairs.
She took the stairs three at a time, her heart pounding against her ribs. She reached the second-floor nursery corridor just as Brenda was reaching for the nursery doorhandle, holding the tray with one hand.
"Brenda! Stop!" Maya shouted.
Brenda spun around, her face instantly pale with shock. "Miss Brooks! What’s wrong?"
Maya marched up to her, her eyes blazing. "What did you put in those bowls?"
"Nothing! I don't know what you're talking about—"
Without asking permission, Maya grabbed the tray, set it on a hallway side-table, and reached directly into Brenda’s apron pocket.
Brenda gasped, stepping back, but Maya pulled out the small glass vial. It was half-empty, labeled with a chemical formula: Concentrated Peanut Extract—a substance Caleb was severely, fatally allergic to, a detail documented strictly in his medical files.
"You tried to poison a fourteen-month-old baby," Maya whispered, her voice shaking with absolute rage.
Brenda panicked. She shoved Maya hard against the wall, dropping her mop bucket, and sprinted toward the rear fire exit stairs.
"Security!" Maya screamed, picking herself up and chasing after her down the long hall. "Security in the east wing!"
Evan, who was downstairs in his study reviewing contracts with Miles, heard the commotion. He burst into the main foyer just as Brenda came flying down the grand staircase, terrified.
"Grab her!" Maya shouted from the top of the landing.
Evan didn't hesitate. With the swift, ruthless efficiency of a man who had survived Chicago's toughest boardrooms and streets, he stepped directly into Brenda’s path, grabbed her wrist, and slammed her against the marble pillar, pinning her arms behind her back.
Two security guards rushed in seconds later, hand-cuffing the screaming woman.
Maya ran down the stairs, holding the glass vial out to Evan, her breathing ragged. "She put this in Caleb's food. It’s peanut extract. He’s severely allergic."
Evan looked at the vial, then at Brenda, his face transforming into something truly terrifying. The cold, lethal aura that had made him feared across the country returned in full force.
He leaned down close to Brenda’s ear, his voice a lethal whisper. "Who paid you?"
Brenda was sobbing now, terrified of the man holding her. "Julian! Julian Vance! He said... he said if the boys got sick, the court would declare the house unsafe under the new nanny! He paid me fifty thousand dollars! Please don't kill me!"
Evan straightened up slowly. He looked at Miles, who was standing by the study door, already on his phone.
"Miles," Evan said coldly.
"Already calling the District Attorney and the FBI, sir," Miles replied smoothly. "Julian Vance will be in custody before his flight leaves O'Hare."
Evan turned to Maya. She was leaning against the banister, trembling from the adrenaline rush, her hands cold.
Evan stepped up to her. Ignoring the security guards, the house staff, and the chaos around them, he reached out and took both of Maya’s hands in his large, warm palms.
"You saved my son," Evan whispered, his voice intense and trembling. "You saved him, Maya."

Maya looked up into his dark eyes and saw something that made her heart skip a beat—not just gratitude, but an intense, overwhelming devotion.
"I promised you I’d protect them," Maya said softly. "I always keep my promises."
