Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Full Depths of Cruelty

The fallout from the office ambush didn't just cement my resolve; it triggered a deeper investigation into my family’s financial and emotional history.
That evening, after putting Lily to bed with a gentle story and a kiss on her forehead, Daniel and I sat at the kitchen island reviewing documents that Harrison had sent over from the forensic audit of our family trust accounts.
What we found made my stomach turn.
It wasn't just that my parents had been living off my business subsidies; it was how they had weaponized those funds against me and everyone around us.
“Look at this,” Daniel murmured, pointing to a highlighted line on a bank statement from three years ago. “Your mother withdrew twenty thousand dollars from your education trust fund account—the one your grandfather set up specifically for your graduate studies—and transferred it directly into Madison’s personal account to buy her luxury sports car.”
I stared at the paper, feeling a cold numbness wash over me. “I never authorized that withdrawal. They told me the account fees had depleted the balance.”
“They lied,” Daniel said quietly, scrolling down to the next page. “And look at this one. Six months before we adopted Lily, your parents set up a contingency will leaving one hundred percent of their estate—including the Lake Oswego house—exclusively to Madison and her future children. Any grandchildren adopted outside of direct bloodline were explicitly excluded from inheritance rights.”
I let out a bitter, humorless laugh. “They planned it before she even arrived. They decided she wasn't family before she even knew what the word meant.”
“Em, there’s more,” Daniel said, his voice dropping. He turned his laptop around to show me an email chain between Madison and my mother dated right after Lily’s adoption finalization.
I leaned in and read the text on the screen:
Mom: Do you think Emily is actually going to keep her? It’s pathetic. A charity case. Madison: Let her play hero for a year or two. Once she realizes she can’t mold a broken kid into a genius, she’ll dump her back into the foster system where she belongs. We just need to make sure none of our family money ever touches that kid. Mom: Exactly. Blood is blood. Everything else is just temporary trash.
The words hit me like physical blows. Temporary trash. That was how they viewed my daughter—a piece of garbage to be discarded when convenient.
My hands began to shake, not from fear, but from a burning, incandescent rage that threatened to consume everything in its path.
“They thought they were untouchable,” I whispered, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. “They thought they could use me as their personal ATM while spitting on the people I love.”
Daniel reached across the counter, gripping my hands tightly in his. “They’re done, Em. Their power over you is gone. We have the legal documents, we have the audit trails, and we have each other. Whatever comes next, we face it together.”

I looked into Daniel’s steady, unwavering eyes, and the storm inside me began to quiet. I nodded slowly.
“You’re right,” I said. “Let’s finish this once and for all.”
