Chapter 10 - A True Family Christmas

December 25th—Two Years Later.

The snow fell softly over the West Hills of Portland, turning the pine trees outside our windows into frosted sculptures of white and silver.

Inside, our home was a wonderland of warmth, cinnamon scents, and sparkling fairy lights. The Christmas tree towered toward the ceiling, adorned with handcrafted ornaments, including a newly added wooden star bearing the engraved words: Lily – Our Forever Heart.

The dining room table was set with fine china, crystal glasses, and a magnificent roasted turkey surrounded by all our favorite dishes.

And around the table sat the people who truly mattered.

Daniel sat to my right, his eyes shining with quiet pride as he poured sparkling cider into our glasses. Friends from our neighborhood and community—people who had stood by us, who loved us for who we were, and who cherished Lily as the bright, brilliant soul she was—filled the room with laughter and cheer.

At the center of it all sat Lily.

She was eight years old now, taller, more confident, with a bright red holiday dress and a ribbon tied in her dark hair. She was holding court, telling a hilarious story to our neighbors about how she tried to teach our golden retriever how to sing Christmas carols.

Everyone burst into laughter, including Lily, whose bright, ringing giggle echoed off the walls.

I looked around the table, my heart overflowing with a peace so deep it felt almost sacred.

I remembered that terrifying hospital bed in St. Mary’s, the cold voice on the phone, the threat to my daughter’s safety, and the exact moment I realized I had to choose between appeasing toxic bloodline abusers or protecting my child.

I had chosen Lily. I would choose her a million times over.

As we raised our glasses for the holiday toast, Daniel caught my eye across the table. He smiled, lifting his glass toward me.

“To family,” Daniel said warmly. “The ones we’re given, and the ones we choose.”

“To family,” I echoed, raising my glass high, our fingers brushing gently across the table.

Lily stood up on her chair, her eyes shining bright as she lifted her cup of sparkling cider right along with us.

“To us!” she cheered brightly.

We all clinked our glasses together, the clear, beautiful chime ringing out into the cozy room, drowning out every shadow of the past, and welcoming in a future that was bright, unshakable, and completely, perfectly ours.
