Chapter 4 - What Lies Beneath

The sub-basement of the Vance estate smelled of ozone, bleach, and cold stone. It was a stark, clinical world beneath the lavish marble upstairs—a secret facility hidden behind a false wall in the estate's private gym.

Maya pushed Lily and Chloe down the brightly lit corridor, the rubber wheels of the chairs squeaking softly against the gray linoleum floor. Two medical technicians in navy scrubs, sent by Eleanor, followed closely behind carrying portable diagnostic equipment.

"It feels strange," Chloe whispered, reaching down to touch her own thigh. "It feels like... like my legs are filled with cold water that's slowly warming up."

"That's the blocker wearing off," Maya explained gently, stopping the chairs outside Room 4. "The medicine your doctor gave you wasn't helping your nerves heal. It was blocking the signals from your brain. Every time your body tried to heal itself, the medicine reset the damage."

Lily looked up at Maya with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Why would our own father do that to us? He bought us everything. He built us this house!"

"He didn't do it because he hated you," Maya said, swiping the silver keycard against the reader beside the heavy steel door. The lock clicked, and the door swung open with a soft hiss of pneumatic pressure. "He did it because three years ago, his company was going bankrupt. When your mother died in that car crash, her trust fund was set to transfer to you girls on your eighteenth birthday—unless you were permanently incapacitated, in which case Victor remained the sole trustee for life."

The room inside was filled with humming server towers, steel cabinets, and rows of refrigerated glass cases holding small, clear vials filled with a pale blue liquid.

One of Eleanor's medical technicians walked over to the glass cases, taking a vial and examining the label under a small flashlight. "My God," the technician whispered, his face darkening. "It's a modified neuro-inhibitor. Synthetic toxin. Designed to suppress motor neuron firing without causing permanent brain tissue death. It’s an illegal experimental compound."

Maya walked over to the main computer terminal in the corner. She didn't press any buttons. She simply placed her small, calloused palm against the cold metal casing of the central processing unit.

For a long moment, she closed her eyes.

The ambient lights in the room flickered slightly. The high-pitched hum of the server fans shifted pitch, dropping an octave into a low, vibrating drone.

"What is she doing?" Chloe whispered to her sister in awe.

"She... she's listening," Lily replied, watching Maya with open wonder. " Upstairs, when she touched our legs... it felt like she was listening to our bones."

Maya opened her eyes. "The master decryption key is stored in an offshore drive registered under the name Project Lazarus. The files contain the original hospital records from the night of the crash, as well as the wire transfers Victor made to Dr. Ross's private account in the Cayman Islands."

The technician stared at her in utter disbelief as the computer screen suddenly flared to life on its own, bypassing three layers of biometric passwords and displaying thousands of green lines of encrypted data.

"How... how did you do that?" the technician stammered. "That terminal requires a 256-bit security clearance!"

"The machine wants to tell the truth," Maya said simply, turning away from the screen. "Everything built by humans wants to do what it was made to do. Victor forced it to lie, just like he forced his daughters to stay still."

Before they could download the data to an external drive, a sudden metallic thud echoed from the corridor outside, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps.

The door to Room 4 slammed open, and three men in unmarked black tactical gear stepped inside, their suppressed submachine guns raised and pointed directly at Maya and the twins.

Behind them stepped a man in his late fifties, dressed in a sharp charcoal coat, holding a silver walking cane with an ivory handle.

It wasn't Victor.

May you like

It was Julian Vance—Victor's older brother, the true chairman of the Vance Syndicate.

"Well, well," Julian said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice, a cruel smile curling his lips. "It seems my idiot little brother let a rat into the pantry."
