Chapter 7 - The Trial of Miracles

Three months later.
The Federal District Courthouse in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity. Hundreds of news crews, reporters, and curious citizens lined the stone steps outside, while inside Courtroom 402, the air was tense, cold, and electric.
Sitting at the defense table in dark orange prison jumpsuits were Victor Vance and his brother Julian Vance. Both men looked hollowed out—Victor’s once-flawless hair was graying and unkempt, his eyes sunken with the realization that his empire had been completely dismantled by federal prosecutors over ninety days of non-stop asset seizures.
Standing at the prosecution’s podium was the Federal District Attorney, presenting a massive mountain of digital evidence—the recovered medical files, the wire transfer records from the Cayman Islands, and the toxicological reports detailing the synthetic neuro-inhibitors found in the estate's basement.
"The prosecution calls its final witness," the DA announced, turning toward the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom. "Miss Lily Vance and Miss Chloe Vance."
A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom.
The double doors opened.
Every camera lens swiveled. Every reporter held their breath.
Walking down the center aisle of the courtroom, wearing matching navy blue dresses, were fourteen-year-old Lily and Chloe Vance. They were not in wheelchairs. They did not use crutches or leg braces. They walked slowly, deliberately, holding each other's hand with quiet dignity, their steps firm against the carpeted floor.
Sitting in the second row of the gallery, watching them with a warm, quiet pride, was Maya. She was wearing a clean gray sweater and a simple silver pendant that Eleanor had given her—a small clockwork locket holding a piece of clear quartz. Beside her sat Eleanor, dressed in a sharp blazer, her arm resting protectively around Maya’s shoulders.
Victor looked at his daughters as they took the witness stand, his lips trembling. "Lily... Chloe..." he whispered, his voice cracking with a mix of shame and desperate regret.
Neither girl looked at him.
Lily adjusted the microphone in front of her. Her voice, once timid and barely audible, filled the large courtroom with crystalline clarity.
"For three years," Lily testified, her eyes fixed on the presiding judge, "our father told us that we were helpless. He told us that the world outside our glass house was too dangerous for us. He gave us expensive toys, brought us fine clothes, and told us he was searching for a cure."
She paused, taking a deep breath, and turned her head slightly to look directly at Victor.
"But the cure wasn't lost, Your Honor," Lily continued, her voice unwavering. "Our father took our legs so he could hold the keys to our mother's money. He traded our lives for his ambition."
Chloe leaned into her microphone, her hand grasping her sister's tightly. "And when a little girl with no money and no power walked into our home and told us the truth... we realized that the only thing keeping us in those chairs was our father's fear."
The courtroom was so silent that the ticking of the wall clock sounded like thunder.
The presiding judge, an elderly woman with sharp, stern eyes, looked down from her bench at the defense table.
"Victor Vance. Julian Vance," Judge Miller declared, her voice cold as steel. "The evidence presented in this court demonstrates a level of calculated cruelty that defies human comprehension. You weaponized medicine against your own children for financial gain."
She brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing BANG.
"Sentence is set at life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for both defendants. Remand them to federal custody immediately."
As federal marshals stepped forward to lock steel handcuffs around Victor's and Julian's wrists, Victor suddenly turned, staring across the bar at Maya sitting in the gallery.

"Who are you?" Victor cried out, his voice echoing frantically as he was dragged toward the side door. "Tell me who you are! What kind of child has that power?!"
Maya didn't answer him. She simply watched him go, her face serene, as the doors slammed shut behind the disgraced billionaire forever.
