Chapter 4 - The Mansion’s Interrogation

Back at the Elmhurst Lane estate, the party was long over. The rented balloon arch had deflated into a sad heap of pink and gold rubber by the front steps, and the three-tier birthday cake sat untouched in the empty dining room, melting under the harsh overhead chandelier.

Detective Vance and Torres stood in the cavernous, vaulted living room where Robert and Patricia Sterling sat on opposite ends of a custom Italian leather sofa, looking less like pillars of society and more like cornered criminals.

"This is an absolute farce," Robert spat, standing up so fast his crystal tumbler of scotch splashed onto the Persian rug. "You are trampling on civil liberties over a domestic squabble. My lawyer will have your badges by morning."

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Detective Vance said, his voice flat and devoid of intimidation. "Unless you want to add resisting an officer and obstruction of justice to the felony child abuse charges currently being processed at the station house."

Patricia gripped the armrest of the sofa, her face pale under layers of expensive foundation. "We were disciplining a disobedient child. The girl has behavioral issues. Her mother encourages her insolence. In our family, we maintain standards."

"Standards," Detective Torres repeated, holding up an evidence bag containing the heavy silver-plated hairbrush with dark brown hairs still tangled in the bristles. "Is this what you call maintaining standards, Mrs. Sterling? Beating a sleeping six-year-old child in the face until her orbital bone fractures?"

"She ruined Madison's photographs!" Patricia shrieked, her aristocratic veneer finally cracking into ugly, shrill hysteria. "She showed up in that hideous cheap dress looking like a street urchin! She didn't belong in my granddaughter's album! We simply corrected a mistake!"

In the doorway of the living room, David stood trembling. His wife Karen was behind him, holding Madison’s hand, bags packed by the front door.

"Dad... Mom, stop talking," David choked out, his voice breaking. "You're only making it worse. You... you went too far. I tried to ignore it, but you went too far."

Robert turned on his son with venomous disgust. "Shut your mouth, you spineless coward! If you had any backbone, you wouldn't have let your sister drag her poverty into this house in the first place!"

"Mr. Robert Sterling and Mrs. Patricia Sterling," Detective Vance stated loudly, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for felony child abuse, aggravated assault, and conspiracy."

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the silent mansion—a sound far sharper and more permanent than the clinking champagne flutes had been an hour earlier.
