Chapter 8 - Headlines and Public Fall

By the end of the week, the Sterling family name was radioactive.
The country club where my parents had ruled as undisputed royalty for thirty years quietly revoked their memberships, scrubbing their plaques from the main pavilion walls. The charitable foundations bearing my father’s name hastily voted to strip his title from their boards, issuing scathing press statements distancing themselves from the brutality of the arrest.
Money could buy silence for a long time, but it couldn't survive a battered six-year-old girl in a yellow unicorn dress and a medical report signed by a federal trauma team.
On Thursday, Francine called with final confirmation regarding the estate freeze.
"Elizabeth, the probate court has officially granted your emergency petition for sole protective guardianship and financial independence," Francine said, sounding triumphant over the phone. "Your parents' corporate holdings are tied up in federal receivership pending criminal asset forfeiture. They can't touch a cent of their offshore accounts. They are officially facing bankruptcy on top of twenty-year prison sentences."
"What about their lawyers?" I asked.

"Their high-priced legal team just walked off the case because the retainer checks bounced," Francine chuckled. "Turns out, when Robert Sterling's slush funds were audited by the state, they found millions in unpaid tax evasion schemes dating back a decade. They aren't just looking at child abuse; they're looking at federal tax fraud."
It was poetic justice of the highest order. The very wealth they had used to lord over everyone around them, the very empire built on ruthless exploitation and cruelty, had become the anchor dragging them down into the dark.
