Chapter 6 - The Corporate Backlash

While Daniel and Vanessa retreated into their modest, two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the state, the corporate world was moving with swift, merciless efficiency.

News of the federal mortgage fraud investigation and corporate embezzlement inquiry involving Daniel Vale spread through the New York financial district like wildfire. Within forty-eight hours, every executive board member who had previously shaken Daniel’s hand at charity galas had publicly distanced themselves from his name.

Sterling Logistics issued a formal press release announcing the immediate termination of their Senior Vice President of Acquisitions due to “unresolvable breaches of fiduciary ethics and corporate compliance.”

One afternoon, three weeks after the Easter incident, I sat in the sunlit atrium of my home, enjoying a quiet cup of herbal tea while reviewing the quarterly financial audit of the Margaret Sterling Foundation for Real Estate Integrity and Ethics—a newly established non-profit funded entirely by the restructured assets recovered from Daniel’s failed ventures.

My chief of staff, Elena, stepped into the atrium carrying a secure tablet.

“Mrs. Sterling,” Elena said politely. “You have a visitor at the security gate. It’s your former daughter-in-law, Vanessa.”

I paused, lowering my teacup to the glass table. “Vanessa? How did she get past the automated screening?”

“She didn't,” Elena replied with a faint smile. “The security system flagged her license plate immediately and denied entry. But she parked her sedan blocking the service lane and is currently demanding to speak with you through the intercom, claiming she has vital information regarding Daniel’s secondary offshore accounts.”

I thought about the woman who had stood in my kitchen, sneering at my rosemary sauce and demanding I stay upstairs during her party.

“Tell security to give her thirty seconds to move her car,” I instructed calmly. “If she hasn't moved it by thirty-one seconds, have the local towing company remove it to the county impound lot at her own expense.”

“Right away, ma’am,” Elena nodded, tapping her tablet.

Ten minutes later, the security log confirmed that Vanessa’s car had been towed, and the estate perimeter was once again peaceful, secure, and entirely free of parasites.
