Chapter 9 - A New Spring

A full year after the infamous Easter Sunday, the calendar turned once again to the sweet, budding promise of spring.

The grass was a brilliant emerald green, the cherry blossoms were bursting into soft pink clouds along the driveway, and the air carried the sweet scent of damp earth and blooming lilacs.

This year, there were no rented champagne towers, no fake socialites, and no arrogant demands for modernizing my life.

Instead, the long mahogany dining table was surrounded by people who mattered: Judge Ellen Pierce, Marcus Vance, my loyal chief of staff Elena, and a dozen brilliant young scholarship recipients from the Sterling Foundation who were studying corporate law and real estate ethics.

I stood at the stove in my own kitchen, stirring a large copper pot filled with my signature rosemary sauce. The rich, aromatic scent filled the house, warming every corner with memories of thirty-three years of genuine tradition.

Elena walked into the kitchen, holding a tray of crystal water glasses, smiling brightly.

“The table is set, Mrs. Sterling,” Elena reported. “The guests are arriving, and everyone is raving about the aroma coming from the kitchen.”

I turned off the burner, removed my apron, and smiled—not with malice or bitterness, but with the quiet, unshakeable joy of a woman who had reclaimed her kingdom.

“Let them in, Elena,” I said. “Easter dinner is served.”
