Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Bride

The sterile white lights of St. Matthew’s Hospital suddenly felt charged with an electric, dangerous energy. Detective Miller didn’t wait for Ethan to process the doctor’s words. He stepped out from the shadows near the nurses' station, his badge glinting under the fluorescent glare.

“Mr. Cole? I’m Detective Miller, Manhattan precinct,” he said, his voice level and devoid of warmth. “And Miss Vance, I suggest you stay right where you are.”

Bianca spun around, her face losing its carefully sculpted composure. “Are you out of your mind? Do you know who my father is? My wedding is tomorrow! I am not answering any questions without my attorney!”

“Your wedding is currently the least of your concerns,” Detective Miller replied, pulling a tablet from his jacket. He tapped the screen and turned it toward Ethan and Bianca.

The video footage was crystal clear, captured by the high-definition security cameras of the underground parking garage three days prior. On screen, Bianca could be seen stepping directly into my path, her expression twisted with malice. As I tried to walk past her carrying my prenatal bag, Bianca lunged forward, shoving me violently against a concrete pillar before storming off.

The impact had triggered the placental abruption—a medical emergency that nearly cost both my life and my son’s.

Ethan stared at the screen, the color entirely draining from his face. He looked at the video, then slowly turned his head to look at Bianca. The woman he had chosen over me, the woman he was supposed to marry in less than twenty-four hours, looked like a cornered animal.

“Ethan, she was taunting me!” Bianca shrieked, her voice cracking as she grabbed his sleeve. “She said you didn't love her, that you belonged to me! She provoked me!”

“The security audio records every word, Miss Vance,” Detective Miller interrupted, tapping another icon on his tablet. Clear as day, the audio played through the hospital corridor: “Stay away from Ethan, you pathetic nobody, or you’ll regret it.” Followed immediately by the violent shove.

“Miss Bennett was three days away from her due date,” Detective Miller continued, his tone hardening. “That shove constitutes felony reckless endangerment and aggravated assault of a pregnant woman. Consequently, the resulting medical emergency elevates the charges.”

“No,” Bianca gasped, stumbling backward until her back hit the glass wall of the NICU. “No, you can't arrest me! Ethan, do something! Tell them!”

Ethan stood paralyzed. His mouth opened, but no words came out. His brain was violently short-circuiting as the pillars of his perfect, arrogant life crumbled beneath his feet. The luxury penthouse, the high-society wedding, the adoring fiancée, the booming corporate empire—it was all evaporating in real-time.

“You have the right to remain silent,” Detective Miller recited smoothly as he stepped forward and clicked handcuffs around Bianca’s delicate, diamond-adorned wrists. The metal clicked with a sharp, final sound that echoed down the quiet hallway.

As two uniformed officers escorted a sobbing, frantic Bianca toward the elevators—her white silk dress rustling pathetically against the institutional floor—Ethan turned back to me. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a terrifying realization.

“Claire,” he whispered, his voice trembling as he reached out a shaky hand. “Claire, please. You saw what she was like. She manipulated me. She’s toxic. We can fix this. We can be a family. You, me, and Noah—”

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked down at the hand he was extending toward me—the same hand that had signed divorce papers behind my back, the same hand that had transferred our joint funds into secret accounts to fund his mistress's lifestyle.

“Don't,” I said softly.

“Claire, please,” he begged, dropping his voice to a desperate whimper. “The baby is mine. You heard the doctor. He’s my son. You can't keep him from me.”

“I’m not keeping him from you, Ethan,” I replied, stepping closer so only he could hear the ice in my words. “The legal system, the federal prosecutor, and the prison system are going to be taking care of your schedule for the next ten years. You won't have time for visitation.”

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from my attorney, Marcus: All accounts frozen. Federal warrants executed on Cole Enterprises. The trap is shut.

I looked up at my ex-husband, smiled, and turned back toward the neonatal unit to watch my son sleep.
