Chapter 8 - Noah’s Homecoming

The nursery at the Greenwich estate was bathed in soft afternoon sunlight filtering through linen curtains.
Dr. Elena Reyes had driven up from Manhattan personally for Noah’s post-NICU checkup, smiling warmly as she packed her stethoscope back into her medical bag.
“He is officially thriving, Claire,” Dr. Reyes announced, jotting down final notes on her clipboard. “Heart rate is strong, weight gain is right on track, and neurological responses are perfect. Whatever stress you’ve been carrying over the past week hasn't affected his development at all.”
I let out a breath I didn't realize I’d been holding, wrapping my arms around my son as he rested against my chest, his tiny fingers curled tightly around my thumb.
“Thank you, Elena,” I whispered, blinking back tears of relief. “For everything. If you hadn't been on call that night...”
“Don't even think about it,” Dr. Reyes interrupted gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. “You’re a remarkable mother, Claire. What you’ve endured over the past month would have broken most people. But you stood your ground and protected your child.”
After Dr. Reyes departed, my mother helped me settle Noah into his crib for his afternoon nap before heading back to the city.
I walked downstairs and stepped out onto the back veranda, looking out over the rolling green lawns that sloped gently down toward the edge of the Long Island Sound.
The air was crisp, carrying the clean scent of autumn and saltwater.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was an email notification from Marcus containing the finalized, stamped court decrees: Sole physical and legal custody awarded to Claire Bennett. Full corporate liquidation and asset forfeiture finalized. Ethan Cole remanded without bail pending federal sentencing.

I didn't feel joy, and I didn't feel hatred. I felt an overwhelming, profound peace.
The chapter of my life titled Ethan was permanently closed, incinerated, and buried beneath the weight of his own crimes.
