Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Collapse

As the trial date approached, Julian and Chloe’s united front began to shatter under the weight of incoming evidence. Locked in separate county detention centers without access to their stolen wealth, the pressure proved unbearable.

In the visitor’s room at the Women’s Correctional Facility, Chloe sat across from her lead attorney, her hair unkempt and her expensive shellac nails chipped away.

“Julian told me we wouldn’t get caught!” Chloe screamed, banging her cuffed hands against the wooden table. “He said he had his sister completely fooled! He told me the money was rightfully his because he managed our lifestyle!”

“Chloe, calm down,” her attorney warned. “The prosecution just added witness testimony from Richard Sterling, along with the digital logs from your smart home system. They have video footage of you hitting Mrs. Vance across the face when she refused to drink her sedatives.”

Chloe’s eyes went wide with terror. “Video? What video?!”

“The security system you installed in the living room had a continuous cloud backup,” the attorney explained coldly. “The State Police recovered all deleted files from the cloud server. The jury is going to watch you strike an elderly woman in HD resolution. You are looking at twenty to thirty years without parole.”

Chloe began to sob uncontrollably, pulling her hair. “It was Julian! It was all Julian’s idea! He’s the one who brought the ropes from the garage! He told me if we didn’t get her money, the offshore creditors were going to break his legs! He owed millions in illegal sports gambling!”

Her attorney leaned in, his expression sharp. “If you want to survive this, Chloe, you need to turn on Julian. You give the prosecution Julian on a silver platter, and we might be able to negotiate a plea deal for fifteen years.”

“I’ll do it!” Chloe wept, her voice echoing in the concrete room. “I’ll tell them everything! Just don’t let me die in prison!”
