Chapter 3 - The War Room

The private medical wing of the Vale Memorial Hospital was silent, warm, and bathed in the soft glow of monitors.

I lay in a king-sized bed, wrapped in a fleece blanket, a warm cup of herbal tea resting on the bedside table. Dr. Vance, the chief of obstetrics, stepped back from the ultrasound monitor with a wide, reassuring smile.

"The baby is completely fine, Claire," Dr. Vance said, showing me the screen. "Heart rate is strong, 145 beats per minute. The stress caused minor muscle contractions, but the bed rest and warm fluids have stabilized everything. Little Eleanor is a fighter."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, my hand resting over my belly. "Thank you, Doctor."

Outside the glass doors of the suite, the atmosphere was altogether different.

My father had transformed the executive lounge into an emergency war room. Eight senior legal partners, three forensic accountants, and the head of Vale Consolidated’s corporate intelligence wing sat around a long mahogany table covered in laptops, financial ledgers, and real-time stock monitoring screens.

I pushed back my blanket, put on a silk robe, and stepped out into the lounge.

"Claire, you should be resting," my father said immediately, standing up from the head of the table.

"I'm fine, Dad," I said, my voice firmer than it had been in years. I took a seat beside Harrison Cross. "Show me the board."

Harrison tapped his tablet, projecting a complex web of corporate entities onto the large wall monitor.

"The Hawthorne Group is dangerously over-leveraged," Harrison explained, pointing to red numbers flashing on the screen. "Adrian spent the last eighteen months expanding into commercial real estate, buying up debt to finance luxury developments. He assumed that because he was married to you, the Vale Trust would backstop any financial shortfall."

"Did he use my name to secure the loans?" I asked.

"He used forged signatures," Harrison revealed, opening a folder containing several loan applications. "Adrian presented papers to three major private equity firms claiming that you, as the sole beneficiary of the Ashford Trust, co-signed as a personal guarantor for fifty million dollars in construction bonds."

A cold, calculating fury settled into my chest. I remembered the nights Adrian brought home stacks of "routine estate documents" for me to sign while I was nauseous from severe morning sickness. I had trusted him. I had signed where he told me to sign, believing he was protecting our future.

"He was setting me up," I whispered. "If the developments failed, the debt would fall entirely on my personal trust, leaving the Hawthorne family clean."

"Exactly," Harrison nodded. "He was planning to divorce you after the baby was born, take full custody using his mother's claims of your 'emotional instability,' and leave you stripped of your fortune while holding fifty million in toxic debt."

My father’s hand came down on the table, cracking the polished wood under the sheer force of his fist. "I want him in handcuffs by tomorrow morning."

"No, Dad," I said quietly.

The entire room went still. Harrison and my father both turned to look at me in surprise.

"No?" my father asked, his brows furrowing. "Claire, he committed felony bank fraud and domestic assault."

"If we put him in jail right now, he gets to play the victim," I said, leaning forward, my eyes locking onto the financial schematics on the wall. "His mother will hire expensive lawyers, claim it was a domestic dispute, and drag my name through the mud during a public trial. I don't just want him in jail, Dad. I want him ruined. I want him to watch every dollar, every property, and every shred of social status he built on my back dissolve into dust."

A slow, terrifying smile spread across Arthur Vale's face. The master of corporate warfare recognized his own blood.

"What is your command, daughter?" my father asked softly.

"Call in the loans," I said coldly. "Block their refinancing options. Let Vanessa enjoy the mansion for another twelve hours. Tomorrow at noon, we begin the receivership."

"And the grand gala tomorrow night?" Harrison asked, a sharp glint in his eye. "The Hawthorne Group’s annual anniversary celebration is scheduled for 8:00 PM at the Grand St. Regis."

I picked up my tea cup, taking a slow sip.

"Tell the hotel management that Vale Consolidated has purchased the venue," I said. "Let them set up the party. Let Eleanor invite all of her high-society friends. Let Adrian introduce Vanessa as his new queen."

I looked my father dead in the eye.

"And then, we attend."
