Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Adrian stepped forward, his face a terrifying mask of panic, desperation, and sudden, pathetic groveling. He shoved Vanessa away from him so hard she almost stumbled into the champagne fountain.
"Claire!" Adrian cried out, reaching his hands toward me, though Arthur Vale’s chief security officer immediately stepped between us, placing a heavy arm across Adrian’s chest. "Claire, baby, please look at me! I was confused! Vanessa tricked me! She lied to me about everything!"
Vanessa’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. "What?! Adrian, you told me she was a charity leech! You told me you were going to kick her out months ago!"
"Shut up, you gold-digging tramp!" Adrian screamed at Vanessa in front of the entire high-society crowd. He turned back to me, tears streaming down his face, dropping onto his knees beside his father. "Claire, I love you! You’re carrying my daughter! Our baby! We can fix this! We can go home!"
Eleanor sprinted forward, grabbing my emerald sleeve with manic desperation. "Claire! Think of the Hawthorne legacy! You are my daughter-in-law! I loved you like a daughter! I was just stressed about the baby's health!"
I pulled my arm back, leaving Eleanor clutching empty air.
"You spat in my face, Eleanor," I said, my tone as icy as absolute zero. "You called my mother's ring cheap. You called my daughter a trap."
I looked at Harrison Cross and gave a single nod.
Harrison pulled a thick stack of blue legal folders from his leather case and stepped up to the orchestra microphone on the central stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Harrison’s voice echoed through the high ceilings. "May I have your attention please."
The room was so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioning.
"As of 8:00 PM tonight," Harrison declared, "Vale Consolidated has completed the full foreclosure and asset acquisition of the Hawthorne Group. All corporate accounts, physical properties, vehicle fleets, and intellectual property formerly owned by Victor and Adrian Hawthorne are now the exclusive property of the Ashford Trust."
Gasps erupted across the room. Several board members immediately turned their backs on Victor, stepping away as if he carried a contagious disease.
"Furthermore," Harrison continued, holding up a second document sealed with a red state seal, "the State Attorney General’s Office has issued formal arrest warrants for Adrian Hawthorne."
Two uniformed state troopers, who had been waiting in the back of the ballroom, walked down the center aisle, their handcuffs clicking loudly as they unholstered them.
"Charges include," Harrison listed off calmly, "Fifty million dollars in bank fraud, forging the signature of a trust beneficiary, tax evasion, and felony domestic endangerment of a pregnant person."
Adrian’s eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "No... no! Dad, do something! Call the lawyers!"
Victor didn't move. He sat on the floor, staring blankly at the ground, a completely broken man.
The troopers grabbed Adrian by his arms, forcing him up from his knees. Adrian began to thrash and scream like an animal being dragged to a slaughterhouse.
"Claire! Don't do this! I'm your husband! I'm the father of your child!" he shrieked as the iron cuffs snapped tight around his wrists. "You can't leave me in jail! Claire!"
I took a slow, deliberate step toward him. I stopped inches from his sweating, terrified face.
"You told me last night that I had nothing, Adrian," I whispered so only he could hear. "You told me the house was never mine."
I leaned in closer, my eyes burning into his soul.
"It wasn't. But your entire life was mine. And tonight, I’m taking it all back."
I turned my back on him. The troopers dragged the screaming, weeping former CEO out through the grand double doors of the ballroom, in front of every reporter, photographer, and high-society elite in the city.
Vanessa tried to slip away quietly into the crowd, but two security guards blocked her path, taking away the designer robe and handbag she had stolen from my closet earlier that morning.
Eleanor collapsed into a chair, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands as the life she had built on arrogance and lies crumbled around her.
Arthur Vale took my hand, placing it over his arm.

"Shall we leave, Claire?" my father asked softly.
"Yes, Dad," I replied, holding my head high. "Let's go home."
