Chapter 5 - THE BATTLE FOR VALERIA’S LIFE

In the pediatric intensive care unit of the central hospital, the heart monitor beeped with a steady, agonizing rhythm: beep... beep... beep...
Valeria lay motionless beneath a tangle of white hospital sheets. Her small face was pale, almost translucent, surrounded by tubes and IV drips feeding counter-agents and heavy antibiotics into her veins.
Her mother, Lupita, sat in a wheelchair pushed right up against the glass partition, weeping silently, her hands pressed against the cold window pane. She hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. Her back pain was completely forgotten, eclipsed entirely by the gaping wound in her chest where her daughter’s life hung by a thread.
Dr. Gomez stepped out of the ICU unit, walking over to Lupita and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“How is she, Doctor? Please tell me my little girl is going to make it,” Lupita begged, looking up with red, swollen eyes.
“The surgery was successful in removing the remaining capsules, and we flushed the toxins from her digestive tract,” Dr. Gomez said carefully, choosing her words with professional gentleness. “However, because one of the packages leaked prior to extraction, she suffered acute systemic toxicity. Her kidneys are under immense stress. The next twenty-four hours are critical. She is fighting hard, Mrs. Hernández. She is a very strong little girl.”
“Can I see her?” Lupita whispered. “Just for a minute. Just so she knows her mother is here.”
Dr. Gomez nodded, unlocking the heavy glass door. “Dress in the sterile gown and gloves. But keep it brief. She needs absolute rest.”
Lupita wheeled herself inside the sterile room. She stopped beside the small hospital bed, trembling as she reached out to touch Valeria’s tiny, cold hand.
“My love… my sweet little Valeria,” Lupita choked out, pressing her forehead against the edge of the mattress. “Mommy is here. Daddy is coming. You’re going to be okay. Please open your eyes for me, my angel.”
For a long, terrifying moment, there was no response. The heart monitor continued its relentless, mechanical song.
Then, slowly, Valeria’s fingers twitched.
Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing dark, confused eyes that stared up at the hospital ceiling before focusing dimly on her mother.
“Mommy…?” Valeria’s voice was barely a dry rasp, scratching against her throat.
Lupita let out a sob of pure, overwhelming relief, kissing her daughter’s knuckles over and over. “I’m here, my life. I’m right here. You’re safe.”

Valeria’s lower lip quivered. Tears slipped down her cheeks into her hair. “Did… did the bad men take Daddy?”
“No, no, my love,” Lupita promised fiercely, her voice steadying with sudden, absolute conviction. “Your daddy didn't do anything wrong. And the police are going to catch the monster who did this. You don't have to be afraid anymore.”
