Chapter 6 - THE NET CLOSES

Back at the precinct, the digital forensics team had cracked the password on Ramón’s recovered laptop within hours.

The encrypted messaging app revealed a network of handlers operating out of a local auto-body repair shop near the industrial outskirts of Ecatepec—a known front for regional drug distribution.

Detective Morales slammed his hand down on the briefing table, gathering his tactical team.

“We have him,” Morales announced, pointing to a satellite map displayed on the wall monitor. “Ramón hasn't fled the city yet. He’s hiding out in a reinforced back room of Taller Mecánico El Águila, waiting for a transit contact to hand over fake travel documents and cross into Hidalgo.”

“What about the father, sir?” a tactical officer asked. “José Hernández?”

Morales paused, looking toward the holding cell where José was still sitting, exhausted and broken.

“Release him,” Morales said firmly. “He’s cleared of all criminal suspicion. Give him his phone, let him clean up, and assign an escort car to take him directly to the hospital to see his daughter and wife. He’s been through hell.”

“And the target?”

“We go in hard, fast, and quiet,” Morales said, pulling his tactical vest over his shoulders and racking the slide of his service pistol. “We take Ramón alive. I want to know every single name on his roster, and I want every child on that list pulled into protective custody before the sun comes up.”

Within twenty minutes, three unmarked police units and an armored tactical vehicle rolled silently down the industrial street toward Taller Mecánico El Águila.

The garage was dark, its corrugated metal shutters pulled halfway down. Inside, a single overhead bulb cast a dim yellow glow over rusted car frames and oil-stained concrete.

Detective Morales signaled his team to breach.

Bang!

The side door flew open under the weight of a tactical ram.

“Police! Nobody move! Hands where I can see them!” officers shouted, flooding the dark workspace with blinding tactical flashlights.

Scattered mechanics scrambled in panic, but in the back office, trying to force open a floor safe filled with cash and false passports, was Ramón.

He spun around, his hand instinctively dropping toward his waistband where a heavy revolver rested in a leather holster.

“Don’t even think about it!” Morales yelled, leveling his rifle directly at Ramón’s chest.

Ramón froze, his fingers hovering over the gun grip. He looked at the circle of armed officers surrounding him, realized there was no escape, and slowly raised his hands in the air, a cold, mocking smirk twisting his lips.

“You’re too late,” Ramón sneered as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists. “The package was delivered. The system wins either way.”

Morales stepped forward and drove the butt of his palm hard against Ramón’s jaw, sending him crashing backward into the metal filing cabinets.

“Shut your mouth,” Morales snarled, signaling the officers to drag him out. “Your game is over.”
