Chapter 5 - The Unseen Guardian

At 5:30 AM, Elena Alvarez trudged up the dark stairs of her apartment building. Her lower back throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, her hands were dry and cracked from commercial chemical cleaners, and her boots were soaked with freezing rain.

Her heart was heavy. She had spent the last eight hours sweeping four floors of executive offices in the Mercer Tower while her mind raced frantically. She knew the milk was running out. She had spent her last three dollars on bus fare to get to work.

She unlocked door 3B, preparing herself for the heartbreaking sound of her baby crying from hunger.

Instead, she stepped into absolute, breathtaking quiet.

The apartment smelled of roasted chicken and warm vanilla.

Elena froze, her keys slipping from her numb fingers. She rushed into the small kitchen, her heart pounding in terror.

The counters were overflowing with high-end groceries. Four massive tins of baby formula sat neatly lined up beside six new bottles. On the table rested two soft fleece blankets, three warm containers of food, and a sealed white envelope.

On the sofa, Maya was sleeping soundly under a warm blue blanket, her hand resting protectively over baby Leo, who was sleeping peacefully in his bassinet, his stomach round and full.

"Maya!" Elena gasped in a terrified whisper, running over and shaking her daughter’s shoulder. "Maya, wake up! What happened here? Whose food is this? Where did this come from?"

Maya rubbed her eyes, blinking against the light. "Mom? You're home!"

"Maya, answer me!" Elena pleaded, panic lacing her voice. "Did someone break in here? Did you talk to a stranger?"

"It was an accident, Mom," Maya explained quickly, sitting up. "I tried to text Aunt Sarah last night because Leo was crying so hard and the milk was gone. But I typed a 9 instead of a 6. A man named Julian received it."

Elena turned deathly pale. "A stranger? A strange man came to our apartment at midnight?!"

"He brought food, Mom!" Maya pointed to the table. "He brought formula for Leo! He warmed the bottle himself! He was so nice... he didn't even ask for money."

Elena walked over to the table with trembling hands. She opened the white envelope.

Stack after stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills spilled out onto the table, along with a small, heavy silver business card engraved with dark lettering:

JULIAN MERCER Chief Executive Officer Mercer Global Enterprises

Elena collapsed into a wooden chair, clutching her chest as tears flooded her eyes. She knew that name. Every cleaning worker in the city knew that name. It was the name carved in three-foot gold letters across the marble lobby of the skyscraper she had spent the entire night scrubbing on her knees.
