Chapter 8 - The Plot Against the Miracle

Two weeks passed. The news of Julian Mercer’s sudden overhaul of corporate janitorial staff swept through the company, earning him immense respect, but behind closed doors, bitterness festered.
Gavin Vance, out on temporary bail while awaiting trial for grand larceny and extortion, was ruined. His house was leveraged, his reputation was destroyed, and he faced years in prison. In his twisted, revenge-obsessed mind, he didn't blame Julian Mercer—he blamed the twelve-year-old girl and her mother who had exposed him.
On a cold Thursday afternoon, Maya was walking home from school.
She had her backpack slung over her shoulders and was feeling happier than she had in years. Her mother was now working daytime hours as the newly appointed Regional Supervisor of Facilities at Mercer Tower, making more money than she ever dreamed of. They were moving into a beautiful three-bedroom apartment near a park at the end of the month.
As Maya turned down the quiet block near her school, a dark, battered sedan pulled up alongside the sidewalk.
The door flew open.
Before Maya could scream, a heavy hand grabbed her arm, dragging her violently into the back seat.
"Shut up!" a voice snarled.
Maya looked up in sheer horror. It was Gavin. His eyes were wild, his hair messy, and he smelled heavily of alcohol.
"You ruined my life!" Gavin roared, locking the child locks and stepping on the gas pedal. The car sped off down the street, tires screeching against the asphalt. "You and your pathetic mother! You think some billionaire is going to save you now?!"
Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached into her pocket, her fingers frantically brushing against her phone.
She didn't dial 911—she knew it would take too long to explain. She hit speed dial number 1.
The number she had saved under the name: Uncle Julian.
In his corner office, Julian was reviewing quarterly reports when his personal phone chimed.
He answered instantly. "Maya?"
Instead of a greeting, a metallic struggle echoed through the speaker, followed by Gavin’s furious screaming in the background: "I'm taking you to the old rail yard! Let's see how much Mercer pays to get his precious little street rat back!"
Julian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed into the glass window.
"Gabe!" Julian shouted, his face instantly turning to thunder. "Track Maya’s GPS signal NOW! Call the SWAT team! Gavin has her!"

Within ten seconds, Gabe had the live satellite feed pulled up on his tablet. "She's moving east on 5th Avenue toward the abandoned industrial rail yard on the river!"
Julian grabbed his coat, his eyes burning with a lethal dark rage that no corporate competitor had ever seen. "If he touches one hair on her head, I will tear this city apart."
