Chapter 4 - The Secret Life of Apartment 4B

While Rachel drove through the grey pre-dawn light toward Lynch Road, social media in Detroit was already boiling over with a vicious, distorted narrative.

By 6:00 a.m., the video taken by the neighbor from the apartment hallway had gone viral on local community pages and short-video platforms. Titled “Horrible Mother Leaves Toddlers Alone While She Parties,” the clip showed Officer Rachel Brooks carrying a feverish Leo out of Apartment 4B while onlookers hurled insults and recorded every second.

Within hours, thousands of online vigilantes began ripping Clara Evans to shreds. Comments poured in by the tens of thousands: “Lock her up forever!” “Trash parents shouldn't have kids!” “Poor babies abandoned by a worthless addict!”

None of the commenters knew about the battered women’s shelters Clara had fled from. None of them knew about the three different restraining orders she had filed in two years, paying filing fees out of wages earned cleaning office buildings at night. None of them knew that she hadn't bought herself a new pair of shoes in three years so she could afford the lock on her door and the heavy wooden chair wedged beneath the knob.

Back at the precinct, Captain Miller slammed his coffee mug onto his desk as he watched the online outrage grow.

“The media is circling like vultures,” Miller muttered, rubbing his temples. “Child Protective Services is getting calls demanding the children be placed in permanent foster care because of this public backlash.”

Marcus Thorne stood by the captain’s desk, dropping a thick manila folder onto the blotter.

“Sir, the public has it completely backwards,” Marcus said, his voice hard. “Clara Evans wasn't partying. She was running for her life. And right now, she’s being held by a violent career criminal who has a history of brutalizing her.”

Miller opened the folder, scanning the police reports, the expired restraining orders, and the still frames Marcus had pulled from the alleyway security camera. The captain’s expression darkened.

“Get these stills to the local news channels immediately,” Miller commanded. “Issue an amber-style alert for Clara Evans. Clear the internet rumors with facts: she was abducted while trying to get medicine for her sick child.”

“On it, Captain,” Marcus said, turning back to his console with a renewed sense of urgency. The clock was ticking, and every second Clara spent with Victor Cole was a second too close to tragedy.
