Chapter 7 - Breaking the Lock

“Do it, cop! Make your move!” Victor taunted, shifting his weight behind Clara’s chair, using her small frame as a human shield while keeping the heavy wrench poised to strike.

Rachel kept her breathing slow and steady. She knew that any sudden movement would prompt Victor to lash out at Clara. She needed a distraction—a microscopic crack in his frantic focus.

Suddenly, from the dark rafters above the office, a heavy pigeon spooked by the tension fluttered wildly against the corrugated tin roof, dislodging a cascade of rusted bolts and dry insulation that crashed loudly onto an empty oil drum right behind Victor.

Clang!

For a fraction of a second, Victor flinched, his head whipping backward toward the noise.

That microsecond was all Rachel needed.

With preternatural precision, she stepped forward, bypassed Clara’s shoulder, and fired her taser rather than her sidearm, aiming squarely at Victor’s broad chest.

The twin darts struck with a sharp thwack.

Electricity surged through the leads with five萬 volts of arresting force. Victor’s eyes went wide, his muscles instantly locking up as a guttural shriek ripped from his throat. The heavy iron wrench slipped from his nerveless fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.

He pitched forward, collapsing like a felled oak tree, completely incapacitated.

Rachel rushed forward, holstering her taser and kicking the wrench far out of reach before diving down to check Victor’s restraints. Within seconds, she had pulled heavy-duty zip-ties from her utility belt and secured his wrists behind his back.

She turned immediately to Clara, pulling a pocketknife from her belt to slice through the thick electrical cords binding the young mother to the chair.

“You’re safe now, Clara. I’ve got you,” Rachel breathed, helping Clara to her trembling feet.

Clara’s legs buckled, and Rachel caught her in a steady embrace. The young mother wept uncontrollably, burying her face in Rachel’s tactical vest.

“My kids... oh god, my babies...” Clara sobbed, her fingers clutching frantically at Rachel’s sleeves. “Are they okay? Were they scared?”

“They’re safe, Clara,” Rachel assured her, her own voice thick with emotion. “Lily called 911 right when she was supposed to. She kept her brother safe. They’re both at St. Jude’s Hospital right now, waiting for you.”

As heavy boots echoed through the warehouse entrance—backup finally arriving with sirens wailing outside—Rachel guided Clara out of the dark, suffocating room and into the crisp, clean air of the Detroit morning.
