Chapter 7 - Tracking the Donor’s Son

By Saturday afternoon, the Peoria Police Department—finally stripped of local political protection and operating under direct scrutiny from the Illinois State Attorney General's office—moved with lightning speed.

Federal agents and state troopers swarmed the Bradley University campus.

Security Supervisor Miller was arrested at his desk before he could delete the secondary server logs. His nephew, the thug who had carried out the brutal assault on Lily, was picked up at a local diner three miles off campus. And Chad Sterling was hauled out of the science building in handcuffs, sobbing hysterically as camera crews captured every single frame for the evening news.

I stood on the front steps of Mercy General Hospital, watching the news coverage replay on a television screen through the lobby window.

The anchor’s voice echoed across the pavement: “...breaking news tonight as the sweeping corruption scandal at Bradley University widens. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of corporate heir Chad Sterling and several campus security officials following a violent assault on nineteen-year-old student Lily Mercer...”

I clicked my phone off, sliding it into my pocket.

The institutional cover-up had collapsed. The men responsible were behind bars. But none of that mattered compared to what was happening inside Room 214.

I walked through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital, taking the elevator up to the pediatric intensive care unit.

When I reached Lily’s room, the door was slightly ajar.

I pushed it open softly.

Priya Anand, the trauma surgeon, was standing beside the bed, checking Lily’s charts. She looked up and smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached her eyes for the first time since I had met her.

"Mr. Mercer," Priya said quietly. "You might want to step inside."

My heart skipped a beat. I stepped up to the side of the bed.

Lily’s eyes were open.

The heavy swelling around her left eye had subsided significantly. The bandages wrapping her jaw were gone, replaced by a supportive brace. She looked tired, pale, and fragile, but she was awake.

She turned her head slowly, her big brown eyes locking onto mine.

"Dad..." she whispered, her voice raspy, broken, but unmistakably clear.

I sank into the chair beside the bed, burying my face in my hands for a brief second as a wave of overwhelming relief washed over me. Then I looked up, taking her small, cold hand in both of mine, pressing it gently against my cheek.

"I'm here, sweetheart," I choked out, a tear finally breaking free and rolling down my cheek. "I'm right here. You're safe."

May you like

Lily managed a weak, tired smile. "I knew... I knew you'd come find me."

"Always," I whispered, kissing her knuckles. "Always."
