I stood on the back courtyard of the West Science Complex—the exact spot where Lily had been attacked just weeks earlier.
The drainage grate had been cleaned. The blood had been washed away by federal forensics teams. But the memory of that terrifying night remained etched into the concrete.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out. It was a text message from Priya Anand: “Patient is cleared for discharge tomorrow morning, Mr. Mercer. She’s strong. She’s ready to come home.”
A profound sense of peace washed over me, heavier and warmer than anything I had felt in years.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket, took one final look around the quiet campus courtyard, and walked toward my truck parked on Elmwood Avenue.
