Chapter 4 - Sanctuary and Protection

As the clock struck 3:00 AM on Christmas morning, the commotion in the mansion finally subsided. The guests, thoroughly shaken and scandalized by Adrian’s arrest, had long since departed under strict instructions from Liam’s security team to keep quiet about the night's events.

The house manager, Mrs. Gable—an elderly woman with kind eyes who had served the Cooper family for decades—led Grace and sleeping Noah to the grand guest suite on the second floor.

"The room has been warmed, Mrs. Miller, and I’ve laid out fresh clothes, winter coats, and baby supplies," Mrs. Gable said gently, opening the double doors to a magnificent room adorned with velvet drapes, a roaring fireplace, and a mahogany crib draped in handmade quilts.

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable. I don't know how to ever repay you or Mr. Cooper," Grace whispered, tears stinging her eyes once more—not of despair, but of profound, overwhelming relief.

"You don't have to repay anything, child," Mrs. Gable smiled warmly, touching Grace’s arm. "You and that little angel belong here tonight. Rest."

After laying Noah gently in the crib—where the baby stretched out his tiny legs and sighed happily in his sleep—Grace stood by the window, watching the moonlight reflect off the pristine white snow blanketing the sprawling estate grounds.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Grace opened it to find Liam standing in the hallway. He had removed his black dinner jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, and he looked exhausted, the weight of a corporate empire visibly resting on his shoulders.

"I didn't mean to wake you," Liam said quietly. "I just wanted to make sure you had everything you needed."

"We have everything," Grace said, leaning against the doorframe. "More than I ever dreamed of having tonight. How is... how is everything downstairs?"

"Adrian is in a holding cell downtown, awaiting arraignment in the morning. The board of directors has held an emergency virtual vote granting me full, unrestricted executive powers to restructure the company. There will be no corporate cover-ups. Every penny Adrian stole will be recovered and returned tenfold to the families he victimized."

Liam paused, looking down at his polished leather shoes before looking back up into Grace’s eyes.

"Caleb was a good man," Liam murmured. "I remember shaking his hand after he completed the electrical overhaul on Tower Six. He told me then that the company needed to invest more in frontline safety gear. I told him we would look into it. I should have listened closer."

"He believed in what he did," Grace said softly, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. "He loved his work, and he believed that building things mattered."

"He was right," Liam said. He took a slow step forward. "Grace... I know this is sudden, and the circumstances are unimaginably painful. But I want you to know that you and Noah are never, ever going to face the cold alone again. As long as I have a breath in my body, your family is under my protection."

Grace felt her heart skip a beat. In Liam’s dark, steady eyes, she saw not just a billionaire making amends, but a man who understood grief, responsibility, and the sacred duty of protecting the innocent.

"Thank you, Liam," she whispered, using his first name for the first time.

He gave her a gentle, reassuring nod, then turned and walked down the dimly lit corridor, leaving her with a sense of peace she hadn't felt since the day her husband died.
