Chapter 5 - The Corporate Coup and the Counter-Attack

Two days after Christmas, the financial world exploded.

The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and local news stations ran front-page exposés detailing the arrest of Adrian Cross, the embezzlement of worker relief funds, and the heroic intervention of a homeless widow on Christmas Eve. Public outrage against Cooper Global’s bureaucratic oversight was swift, but Liam’s aggressive transparency turned the tide. By midday on December 27th, Liam announced the complete restructuring of the company's internal compliance division, naming a renowned independent labor advocate as the new head of worker welfare.

However, Adrian’s allies within the board of directors did not go down without a fight.

A faction of legacy board members—who had quietly benefited from Adrian’s loose accounting practices—attempted a hostile boardroom coup. They threatened to trigger a massive sell-off of company shares, claiming that Liam’s public focus on "charity and worker restitution" was tanking stock prices and violating fiduciary duties to shareholders.

Liam sat at the head of the massive obsidian conference table on the top floor of Cooper Tower, looking out over the panoramic view of the city. Across from him sat three nervous board members led by Julian Vance, an aging, silver-haired investor who had practically raised Adrian in the corporate world.

"Liam, you're acting on emotion," Julian barked, slamming his hand on the table. "Bringing a homeless woman and her infant into your home, letting her dictate corporate policy, launching a multi-million-dollar restitution fund without shareholder approval—you are committing corporate suicide. If you don't drop the internal audits against Adrian’s associates, we will call an emergency vote of no confidence and strip you of the CEO title by sunset."

The room grew dead silent. The corporate lawyers standing behind Liam held their breath.

Liam didn't blink. He slowly picked up a heavy silver pen, tapped it twice against the glass table, and stood up.

"Julian," Liam said, his voice dropping an octave into a chilling, calm register. "Do you know what Adrian was doing in the hours before my son let Mrs. Miller through the gate on Christmas Eve?"

Julian frowned. "What does that have to do with—"

Liam pressed a button on the conference console. A high-resolution document appeared on the main wall monitors—a signed agreement proving that Julian Vance and Adrian Cross had been systematically siphoning funds from the pension portfolio to finance private real estate developments in the Bahamas.

"It means," Liam continued, leaning over the table, locking his gaze onto Julian’s suddenly pale face, "that Adrian wasn't acting alone. He had a board-level sponsor protecting his paper trail. And the moment federal investigators finished cross-referencing his offshore accounts this morning, your name was right at the top of the co-conspirator list."

Julian’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He slumped back into his leather chair, the fight completely drained out of him.

"You have until 5:00 PM to tender your resignation," Liam said coldly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Or I hand this file directly to the U.S. Attorney General alongside Adrian’s. Get out of my building."

Within twenty minutes, Julian Vance and his associates cleared out their offices, leaving Liam in absolute, undisputed control of Cooper Global.
