Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Observatory

Ten minutes later, the Boeing 777 hit the cracked asphalt of the abandoned northern airstrip with a violent shudder. Reverse thrusters roared, bringing the massive jet to a halt at the edge of a dense pine forest.
Outside, storm clouds hung low, dumping heavy snow over the landscape.
Before the plane’s engines had even spooled down, three dark armored SUVs sped across the tarmac, surrounding the aircraft. Men in black tactical gear stepped out, weapons raised.
Inside the cabin, Nathan peered through the emergency door window. "They’re surrounding us. Sarah, stay low with the kids."
Suddenly, the deafening roar of twin rotors shook the sky.
Out of the snowstorm descended two black, unmarked Sikorsky helicopters bearing the Neurosoft emblem. Marcus’s private tactical team dropped from ropes, landing directly on the roofs of Vanguard’s armored vehicles. Flashbang grenades exploded across the tarmac in a blinding barrage of light and sound.
"Go! Go! Go!" Nathan yelled, throwing open the airplane's emergency over-wing hatch.
He carried Emma and Ethan in a protective front harness, while Sarah grabbed Lily, sliding down the inflatable emergency chute onto the snow-covered runway.
Marcus sprinted through the smoke, firing warning shots to suppress the remaining Vanguard guards. "Mr. Wells! Over here! Get into the chopper!"
"Not the chopper!" Nathan shouted over the roaring rotors. "The lake is three miles south through the forest! They’ll track air signatures! We take the snowmobiles!"
Marcus didn't argue. He signaled two of his men, who sprinted toward a staging hut at the edge of the woods, dragging out four high-powered snowmobiles.
Within ninety seconds, Nathan, Sarah, Lily, and Marcus were speeding through the blinding blizzard, navigating the narrow deer trails of the Minnesota forest. The twins were securely strapped beneath Nathan’s heavy heated storm coat, warm and silent against his chest.
Ten minutes later, the trees cleared, revealing a breathtaking, haunting sight.
Rising out of the frozen, snow-covered expanse of Lake Vermilion was a massive, dome-shaped glass structure—the Bio-Tech Conservatory. It sat on a small private island, connected to the mainland by a narrow, submerged stone causeway.
It looked abandoned. The glass panels were covered in frost, and no lights burned within.
"It’s here," Lily said, pointing her small gloved hand toward the center of the dome. "The sleeping room is underneath."
They left the snowmobiles at the shore, rushing across the slippery ice toward the heavy iron doors of the conservatory.
Nathan approached the entry panel. It was dead—no power, no digital display.
"It needs the song," Lily whispered, standing beside him in the howling wind. "Look at the lock."
Nathan looked closely. Below the keyless door handle was a mechanical, physical acoustic diaphragm—an old-fashioned voice-lock designed to react to specific sonic frequencies rather than digital codes.
Lily stepped forward. She pressed her face near the brass grill, took a deep breath, and began to sing the final verse of Catherine’s lullaby.
Where stars are bright and dreams come true... A place of wonder just for you.

As her voice hit the final, soaring note, a heavy mechanical CLACK echoed inside the iron door. Gears turned. Steam hissed from concealed hydraulic valves, melting the ice around the frame.
The heavy doors slowly swung open, revealing a warm, softly lit spiral staircase leading down into the earth.
