Chapter 8 - The Queen on the Board

One month later.

The sun rose brightly over Manhattan, painting the glass skyscrapers of the Financial District in brilliant shades of gold.

Inside the towering glass boardroom of Neurosoft’s global headquarters on Wall Street, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors was underway.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Arthur Vance, the CEO of Vanguard Bio-Tech, along with four disgraced Neurosoft board members who had secretly aided in the corporate takeover attempt during Catherine’s absence.

"The proxy vote is clear," Vance announced arrogance dripping from his voice as he adjusted his golden cufflinks. "With Dr. Catherine Wells declared legally dead and Nathan Wells absent, Vanguard holds forty-one percent of voting shares. We are liquidating the neural division today."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a dramatic bang.

"I wouldn't sign those papers just yet, Arthur," a commanding, crystal-clear voice echoed through the marble hall.

Vance froze. The board members gasped, several dropping their pens in shock.

Walking into the boardroom was Catherine Wells.

She looked radiant, powerful, and entirely healthy, dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory suit. Beside her walked Nathan, carrying little Ethan in a front carrier, while Catherine comfortably held Emma in her arms.

Behind them stepped Marcus, flanked by four federal agents from the Department of Justice, along with Sarah and a proudly smiling Lily.

"C-Catherine?" Vance stammered, turning deathly pale, staggering backward against his leather chair. "You... you were dead!"

"I was waiting, Arthur," Catherine said coldly, stepping up to the head of the table. "Waiting for you to commit full corporate treason and attempted kidnapping on an international flight."

Nathan set a thick stack of digital evidence tablets onto the center of the table.

"Federal warrants have just been executed at Vanguard headquarters in Chicago," Nathan announced, his voice carrying the calm, absolute power of a man who had won everything back. "Your encrypted communications regarding Project Synapse, the flight diversion, and the illegal neuro-experiments have been fully recovered from Vanguard’s private servers."

The lead federal agent stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Vance’s wrists. "Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate espionage, and federal treason."

Vance was dragged out of the boardroom screaming, while the corrupt board members cowered in their seats, waiting for their own imminent arrests.

Catherine walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the magnificent skyline of New York. Nathan walked up beside her, wrapping a loving arm around her waist.

Down in the plush lounge area of the executive suite, Lily was sitting on a plush velvet sofa, reading a storybook to Sarah, while Emma and Ethan played happily with soft toys at her feet.

"How does it feel to have your life back?" Nathan asked softly, leaning down to kiss Catherine’s cheek.

Catherine looked at her husband, then down at the beautiful little girl who had carried her final hope across the sky, and finally at her two peaceful, thriving children.

"My life was never lost, Nathan," Catherine smiled, resting her head against his chest, feeling the deep, steady beat of his heart. "It was just waiting for the right song to bring us home."
