Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath

The recording device sat on his nightstand, the little red light blinking like a malevolent eye. Arthur hadn't slept. He had spent the previous hours obsessively checking the perimeter of the house, finding nothing but overgrown ivy and rot.
At 3:00 AM, the device clicked.
Arthur put on his headphones, his hands trembling. The recording was grainy, filled with the static of an old house. Then, the sound emerged—sharp, crystalline, and terrifying.
“Please... stop,” Lily’s voice echoed through the speakers. It was followed by a low, distorted grinding sound, and then a heavy, raspy breath that clearly didn't belong to a child.
Arthur’s blood turned to ice. He bolted upright, his eyes darting to the floor. The sound was coming from right beneath his bed. He didn't think; he reacted. He lunged for the floor, shoving the heavy bed frame aside with a strength born of pure adrenaline. He ripped back the rug, exposing the loose floorboard he had ignored for months.
He pried it up, the wood screeching in protest. Below, in the crawlspace, he didn't find a monster or a spirit. He found a tangled nest of wires, a small monitor, and a ventilation duct that led directly into Lily’s room.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. A text from an unknown number: “She’s not your daughter, Arthur. But she is the only reason you’re still alive.”
Arthur peered into the darkness of the hole, his flashlight beam cutting through the dust. He saw a pair of eyes reflecting the light—not a girl, but a man in a black tactical mask staring back at him from the shadows of the crawlspace.
