Chapter 3 - The Architect of Shadows

Arthur lunged for the crawlspace opening, but the man—a shadow in the cramped darkness—scrambled back with the agility of a spider. The floorboard frame shattered as Arthur tried to squeeze his shoulders into the gap, but the man had already vanished into a hidden passage leading toward the back of the foundation.
"Get out!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist against the joists.
He didn't wait. He sprinted to Lily’s room, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She was fast asleep, her breathing steady, but as he pulled back the covers, he saw it: a small, silver pin shaped like a weeping eye pinned to her pillowcase. He hadn't put it there. The intruder hadn't just been watching; he had been interacting with her.

Arthur sat by her bed until dawn, his kitchen knife gripped in his hand. He realized the "gossip" Mrs. Gable heard wasn't Lily screaming—it was a recording. A masterfully edited, perfectly timed loop of sound designed to break his sanity.
As the sun rose, Arthur tore the wallpaper off the hallway. Behind the floral patterns, he found not plaster, but a network of fiber-optic cables and tiny, pinhole cameras drilled into every room. His home wasn't just a house; it was a laboratory. He was the subject, and Lily was the bait. He realized then that the only way to catch the shadow was to stop acting like the prey. He began to set his own traps, using the house’s structural weaknesses as his weapon.
