Chapter 6 - The Confession of Grant Voss

In a sterile federal interrogation room in lower Manhattan, Grant Voss sat at a metal table with his head in his hands.
The senior partner of Voss & Rusk Legal looked a shadow of his former self. His expensive silk tie was gone, his collar unbuttoned, and the federal indictment resting in front of him listed seven felony counts carrying a combined sentence of over forty years behind bars.
The heavy metal door clicked open, and Daniel Mercer stepped into the room, followed by Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI.
Daniel pulled out a metal chair and sat down directly across from Grant. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten. He simply placed a single photograph on the table—the image Ruby had captured of Grant handing the forged trust documents to Vanessa Hale in Daniel’s private study.
Grant stared at the photograph, his lower lip trembling slightly.
“She told me it was just a standard pre-nup adjustment,” Grant whispered, his voice cracking. “She said you were losing your edge, that you wanted to hand over operations voluntarily after the wedding.”
“And you believed her?” Daniel asked quietly. “Or did Clayton Rusk promise you a senior partnership in the restructured holding company?”
Grant swallowed hard, looking up into Daniel’s cold gray eyes. “Rusk held my mortgage portfolio. He held the debt on my family’s summer home in the Hamptons. If I didn't draft the forged amendments, he would have ruined me overnight.”
“You made your bed, Grant,” Agent Vance said, leaning against the concrete wall with his arms crossed. “The U.S. Attorney isn't interested in your sob story. But if you want to see a reduced sentence, you’re going to sign a full, sworn confession detailing every corporate crime Clayton Rusk and Vanessa Hale committed over the last decade—including the cover-up of Thomas Carter’s death.”
Grant stared at the pen lying beside the document. He looked at Daniel, searching the billionaire’s face for a shred of mercy that wasn't there.

Slowly, deliberately, Grant picked up the pen and signed his name at the bottom of the page.
The house of cards had finally collapsed.
