Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months after the trial, spring returned to New York with a brilliant, crisp warmth that brought life back to the sprawling lawns of the Westchester estate.

Inside the grand library, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating rows of leather-bound books and casting a golden glow across the mahogany desk where Daniel Mercer sat reviewing architectural blueprints for a new public park being built in memory of Thomas Carter.

The heavy oak door creaked open an inch.

A small face peered into the room, dark braids bouncing with every movement.

“Are you busy, Mr. Mercer?” Ruby asked shyly, holding her camera around her neck with a colorful strap.

Daniel looked up, his face breaking into a warm, genuine smile that he rarely showed the business world.

“Never too busy for my favorite investigator,” Daniel said, setting his pen down. “Come on in, Ruby. What did you capture today?”

Ruby scampered across the Persian rug, hopped onto the chair beside his desk, and proudly held up the camera’s LCD screen.

The image displayed a stunning, perfectly framed macro shot of a blue jay perched on a blossoming dogwood branch outside the library window—crisp, vibrant, and full of unvarnished life.

“That’s incredible, Ruby,” Daniel said, examining the shot with genuine admiration. “You have a real eye for this.”

“My dad taught me how to wait for the right moment,” Ruby said softly, her eyes shining with quiet pride. “He said the truth always comes out if you just look closely enough.”

Daniel reached out, resting his hand gently on her small shoulder.

“He was right,” Daniel murmured, looking past her out the window toward the sunlit horizon where the city skyline stretched endlessly upward, bright, solid, and built to last. “He was right about everything.”
