Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Siege

At 9:45 A.M. on Monday morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Stonebridge Design Group’s headquarters in downtown Columbus was surrounded by news vans.

Grant Vance had leaked the news of Claire’s 'disappearance' and the 'criminal investigation' to every business reporter in the Midwest. He wanted maximum coverage when the board voted to strip her of her title.

Inside the grand penthouse boardroom on the thirtieth floor, twelve board members sat around a massive thirty-foot walnut table—the very table Ethan had spent weeks restoring.

Grant Vance sat at the head of the table, flanked by Arthur Sterling, his senior partner, and two representatives from the corporate equity firm.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Grant said, looking at his gold watch. “It is 9:55 A.M. Ms. Bennett has failed to appear, nor has she presented the founding charter required to exercise her veto power. Pursuant to section four of the bylaws, I move for an immediate shareholder vote to remove Claire Bennett as Chief Executive Officer.”

“Seconded,” Arthur Sterling announced smoothly.

“All those in favor—”

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom burst open.

Claire Bennett stepped into the room.

She wasn't wearing mud-stained clothes. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory suit, her hair pulled back into a flawless chignon, her face radiant and unyielding.

Beside her walked Ethan Reed, dressed in a sharp black suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, and Sophie, who held her head high, wearing her neatest blue school dress.

Behind them came three uniformed officers from the Columbus Police Department and a senior prosecutor from the State Attorney General’s office.

The boardroom erupted into stunned silence.

Grant’s glass of water froze halfway to his lips. “Claire? What is the meaning of this circus?”

“The vote is canceled, Grant,” Claire said, her voice echoing off the glass walls with absolute authority.

She walked down the length of the walnut table, her heels clicking precisely against the marble floor. Ethan stood right behind her, his hand resting supportively near her shoulder.

Claire placed the red leather charter directly in the center of the table.

“The founding charter,” Grant sneered, recovering his composure. “You stole that from my residence last night! I’ve already filed criminal charges against you and your accomplice!”

“You can’t steal what legally belongs to the corporation, Grant,” the State Prosecutor stepped forward, laying a federal warrant on the table. “And as for charges, Mr. Vance, we have a few of our own.”

Grant’s eyes widened. “What?”

“At six o’clock this morning,” Claire explained coldly, looking down at her ex-husband, “Mr. Reed and I delivered forensic banking records to the State Attorney General. Records that were recovered from the safe inside your house—records detailing four years of offshore accounts, illegal kickbacks from Vance & Sterling, and bribery payments made to municipal zoning officials to sabotage Stonebridge projects.”

The board members gasped, several of them sitting up straight, staring at Grant in utter horror.

“That’s a lie!” Grant shouted, standing up so fast his chair rolled backward. “She’s desperate! She’s fabricating evidence!”

“We also have the audio recording from your security system last night, Mr. Vance,” the Prosecutor added calmly. “Where you explicitly admitted on camera to attempting to fabricate criminal charges against Ms. Bennett and Mr. Reed to force a corporate takeover.”

Grant turned pale, his eyes darting wildly around the room, searching for help. But Arthur Sterling immediately moved his chair away from him, and the board members looked away in disgust.

The police officers stepped forward.

“Grant Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, bribery, and conspiracy,” the lead officer announced, pulling Grant’s hands behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs onto his wrists.

As he was led past Claire, Grant glared at her with pure poison. “You destroyed everything!”

Claire looked at him with cool detachment.

“You destroyed yourself, Grant. I just preserved the evidence.”

She watched him get dragged out of the boardroom, the doors slamming shut behind him.

The remaining board members stood up, applauded softly, and turned to face their CEO.

Claire turned to Ethan and Sophie. The long, dark night had finally passed.
