Chapter 8 - The Craftsmanship of Love

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the courtyard behind Stonebridge Design Group’s newly dedicated community restoration center in historic German Village.
Music drifted through the air, accompanied by the smell of grilled food and the happy laughter of dozens of guests.
Ethan stood inside the newly renovated timber workshop, wiping down a massive, hand-carved oak dining table he had spent the last two months crafting.
A pair of small hands wrapped around his waist from behind.
“Dad! Look!”
Ethan turned to see Sophie holding up a certificate with a bright gold seal.
“I won first place in the regional youth architectural drafting contest!” she cheered. “Claire helped me with the CAD drawings, but I did all the structural calculations myself!”
Ethan picked his daughter up, swinging her around as she laughed. “I knew you could do it, Soph! I’m so proud of you!”
“Go tell Claire! She’s outside!” Sophie wriggled down and sprinted out toward the garden.
Ethan stepped out onto the porch, watching his daughter run across the grass toward Claire, who was standing near a flowerbed, chatting animatedly with several local craftsmen and board members.
Claire was dressed in a casual yellow summer dress, her hair flowing freely around her shoulders. She looked younger, lighter, and happier than she ever had in her life.
When she saw Sophie, her face lit up with a brilliant, genuine smile. She caught the young girl in a warm hug, examining the certificate with pure joy.
Ethan walked down the porch steps, his boots crushing the fresh clover, his heart full.
Claire looked up, meeting his eyes across the lawn. She handed the certificate back to Sophie and walked slowly toward him.
“She’s brilliant, Ethan,” Claire said, reaching out to take his hand. Her fingers slid naturally between his, their touch effortless and familiar. “Just like her father.”
“She gets her stubbornness from me,” Ethan smiled, pulling her closer. “She gets her strategic brilliance from you.”
Claire rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.
Over the past year, their lives had woven together like the intricate joinery of Ethan’s finest woodwork. Claire had stepped down from her high-stress corporate role to take over as Chair of the Board, allowing her to spend her days doing what she loved—designing community spaces and mentoring young talent.
And every Thursday night, without exception, Ethan, Claire, and Sophie sat down together at the kitchen table upstairs for family dinner. No dead phones, no court orders, no corporate emergencies.
“Do you remember that night?” Claire asked softly, looking up into his eyes. “In the parking lot? Cold, terrified, sleeping in a car because I had nowhere left to go?”
Ethan wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her tight against him under the warm summer sky.
“I remember,” Ethan murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. “You told me you weren't an address.”
May you like
Claire smiled, her eyes sparkling with tears of happiness as she looked toward the house, where Sophie was already setting the outdoor table for dinner.
“I was wrong,” Claire whispered, bringing her hands up to frame his face. “You and Sophie... you are my address. You are my home.”
