Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

Leo’s story was a harrowing descent into a hidden world that existed just beneath the pavement of our city. As he spoke, the horror of his "employment" under The Collector became clear. He wasn't just a child; he was an asset. The Collector, a man named Marcus Vane, ran a high-tech black market logistics chain that used children to scavenge rare earth metals from discarded electronics in the abandoned subway tunnels—tunnels that the city had officially sealed off decades ago.
"He told us the surface was poisoned," Leo explained, his fingers tracing the jagged pattern of his birthmark. "He said if we stepped into the light, our skin would burn. He kept us in the dark so we would be afraid of the truth."
I took meticulous notes, mapping out the tunnel entrances Leo described. Vane was clever; he used the city’s aging infrastructure to move stolen goods and trafficked kids like ghosts.
"We need to find the access point that connects to his main vault," I said, my mind racing. "If I can get into his server, I can link his financial trail to the disappearances."

"I can take you there," Leo offered, his eyes hardening. "But he has people, Mom. Not just him. He has 'The Watchers.' They’re kids who have been with him the longest. They’re brainwashed. They’ll fight to protect the tunnel."
I felt a surge of protective dread. My son had been forced to witness, and perhaps even participate in, the defense of his own prison. I reached across the table and took his hand. "We aren't going in to fight, Leo. We’re going in to dismantle him from the inside. We’re going to be his worst nightmare: the ghosts he thought he’d buried."
