Chapter 6 - Infiltration

The mission required precision that only a doctor and a survivor could muster. We spent forty-eight hours gathering supplies. I used my medical credentials to secure high-grade sedatives and non-lethal deterrents, while Leo taught me the silent language of the tunnels—the hand signals and vibration warnings they used to evade The Watchers.

On the third night, under the cover of a thick, suffocating fog, we reached the mouth of the maintenance shaft behind the old chemical plant. The smell was metallic and stagnant, a cocktail of rust and damp earth.

As we descended, the air grew thinner. Leo moved with the confidence of a predator, his injured leg now braced by a high-tech medical support I had fashioned for him. We bypassed motion sensors that Vane had rigged, using a pulse-emitter I had built from old clinic equipment.

We eventually found ourselves in a subterranean hub—a sprawling, hidden workshop glowing with the hum of stolen monitors and the flicker of makeshift halogen lamps. Dozens of children were hunched over workbenches, their faces pale and gaunt.

"See those two?" Leo whispered, pointing toward the high-security server room at the end of the hall. "Those are the Head Watchers. They have the keys."

My heart hammered against my ribs. Seeing the scale of the operation confirmed that this wasn't just a local crime—it was a systemic industry of human exploitation. I handed Leo a small, high-frequency jammer I’d engineered. "On my signal, kill the power to the outer ring. I’ll take the server room."

"Mom," Leo whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "If this goes wrong... thank you for coming back for me."

"I never left you," I replied, pressing a small GPS tracker into his palm. "No matter what happens, we leave together."
