Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Stairs

My grip on Brad’s throat didn't loosen, but the ice in my chest melted just enough for me to breathe.

"Matt?" the small voice called out again, trembling from the top of the dark staircase. "Is that the man from the phone?"

Brad thrashing beneath me brought me back. He reached for a shattered table leg on the floor, his face purple, eyes bulging with desperate rage. He swung it toward my head.

I caught his wrist mid-air. With one swift twist, a sickening crack echoed through the ruined foyer. Brad screamed, dropping the wood, but before his voice could carry, I drove my knee directly into his solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him, followed by a short, brutal right hook to his jaw.

He collapsed onto the blood-stained rug, unconscious.

I stepped over his prone body, wiping a smear of his blood from my knuckles onto my dark trousers. I took a slow breath, steadying my posture, softening my face as much as a man like me could manage.

"It's Matt, Emma," I said softly, my voice carrying up the creaking stairs. "It's safe now. You can come down."

A tiny figure stepped into the dim light at the top of the landing.

She was so small. Her hair was a tangled mess of brown curls, and she wore faded pink pajamas covered in faded cartoon bunnies. In her left hand, she clutched a cracked smartphone with a glowing screen. Her right arm was wrapped tightly around a plush stuffed bear missing one eye.

Her big, tear-filled brown eyes stared down at me. Then her gaze flicked to the unconscious monster on the floor, then to her mother lying motionless near the overturned coffee table.

"Mama..." Emma whimpered, her tiny boots shuffling forward.

"Don't look at him, Emma. Look at me," I commanded gently, stepping up three stairs to meet her halfway. "I'm right here. Your mama is breathing. I checked."

She hesitated on the top step, her lip trembling violently. "Are you... are you a cop?"

"No," I answered honestly. "I'm the guy who keeps his promises."

That was all it took.

Emma dropped her phone, hurled her tiny body down the stairs, and threw her arms around my neck. The sudden weight of a terrified child against my chest sent a shockwave straight to my heart. It felt exactly like holding Isabella twenty years ago on the cold linoleum of a hospital hallway.

I lifted her smoothly, wrapping my arm around her back to shield her eyes as I walked down the rest of the stairs. She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her small shoulders heaving with silent, terrifying sobs.

"I took care of him, Emma. He won't touch you or your mama ever again," I whispered into her hair.

I pulled my personal phone from my pocket and speed-dialed my private medical team—a specialized unit I kept on retainer for off-the-record emergencies.

"Boss?" Dr. Mercer answered on the second ring.

"I need an advanced life support ambulance at 412 Maple Street," I said, my tone absolute and devoid of room for debate. "Two trauma specialists. A woman has severe blunt force trauma. Do not call 911. Do not alert local precinct dispatch. Bring her directly to my private wing at Saint Jude’s."

"Understood, Don Reichi. Five minutes."

I hung up, looking down at Sarah Peterson. Her face was swollen, blood matted in her golden hair, but her chest rose and fell in shallow, steady rhythms.

Beside me, Brad groaned on the floor, his fingers twitching as consciousness tried to claw its way back into his alcohol-soaked brain.

Emma flinched, clutching my shirt tighter. "Matt... he's waking up..."

I looked at Brad. The darkness inside me—the ruthless kingpin who ruled Boston's underground with an iron fist—surged to the surface.

"He's not waking up here," I said coldly.

I pulled out my radio line and dialed Vincent, my second-in-command, who was still waiting back at the cigar lounge.

"Vincent," I said into the receiver.

"Boss? What's going on? Where are you?"

"Bring a clean van to 412 Maple Street," I ordered. "There's garbage in the living room that needs to be hauled into the deep basement under the docks. And Vincent?"

May you like

"Yeah, Boss?"

"Don't let him die before I get there."
