Chapter 5 - The Awakening

By the fourth day, the storm over Boston had cleared, leaving behind crisp, blue skies.
Inside the sunlit private room at Saint Jude’s, Sarah Peterson slowly opened her eyes.
The dim fog of heavy painkillers was beginning to lift. She blinked against the bright morning light, feeling the sterile softness of clean white sheets beneath her. Her face throbbed with a dull ache, her arm was encased in a hard plaster cast, but the agonizing pain from four days ago was gone.
Then, panic seized her chest.
"Emma..." she gasped, her voice raspy and dry. She tried to sit up frantically, heart monitor beep accelerating. "Emma! Where is my baby?!"
"Easy, Sarah. Don't pull out your IV lines."
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a perfectly tailored dark suit stood up from an armchair by the window.
Sarah shrank back against her pillows, her eyes wide with instinctual terror. "Who are you?! Where is my daughter?! Where is Brad?!"
Before I could answer, the door to the room pushed open.
Emma rushed into the room carrying a large stuffed plush bear, followed closely by a nurse holding a tray of fresh breakfast.
"Mama!" Emma squealed, dropping her bear and scrambling onto the edge of the hospital bed. "Mama, you're awake!"
"Emma!" Sarah cried out, weeping uncontrollably as she wrapped her uninjured arm around her daughter, kissing her messy curls over and over again. "Oh God, my baby... my sweet baby... are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay, Mama!" Emma beamed, pointing a tiny finger back at me. "Matt saved us! He took the bad man away!"
Sarah froze. She slowly pulled Emma close against her chest, looking up at me with a mixture of profound relief and utter confusion.
"Matt...?" Sarah whispered, her bruised face pale. "I... I don't understand. Who are you? Did the police send you?"
I stepped closer to the side of the bed, keeping my hands visibly open and relaxed.
"Four nights ago, your daughter tried to text a neighbor for help," I explained softly. "She hit the wrong digit. The text came to my personal phone."
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at Emma, who was nodding enthusiastically.
"She told me you were in trouble," I continued. "I arrived at your house twelve minutes later. Brad Kowalski will never set foot in your house, your neighborhood, or your life ever again. He is currently in federal custody facing twenty years of non-parole extortion and assault charges."
Sarah stared at me, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks. "You... you came to our house? A stranger?"
"My name is Matteo Reichi," I said quietly.
Sarah’s eyes widened slightly. Even an ordinary citizen living in Boston knew that name. It was the name whispered in hushed tones on news broadcasts, the name associated with the most powerful syndicate in the city.
"You're... you're the mob boss," Sarah breathed, clutching Emma tighter.
"To the rest of this city, yes," I acknowledged without pretense. "But to your daughter... I was just Matt."
I reached into my breast pocket and pulled out a clean white envelope, laying it gently on the bedside table.
"What is this?" Sarah asked.
"The title deed to a quiet, three-bedroom house in South Newton," I said smoothly. "Along with a clean bank account under your name containing enough funds to cover Emma's education through college and your full recovery. Brad’s debts have been completely erased from the books."
Sarah gasped, shaking her head in utter disbelief. "No... no, Mr. Reichi, I can't accept this! We are strangers! Why would you do all of this for us?!"
May you like
I looked down at Emma, who was smiling softly up at me, holding her little bear.
"Because twenty years ago, I failed to save my own sister," I said, my voice thick with an emotion I hadn't allowed myself to feel in two decades. "Your daughter gave me a second chance to keep a promise. You don't owe me anything, Sarah. You just need to raise your daughter in peace."
