Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The discovery changed everything.

While Clara and Elena slept peacefully under the protection of my guards, I spent my nights in the basement tactical room, pulling up encrypted files from fifteen years ago.

Lorenzo had noticed my change in attitude. He saw the way I looked at Clara, the way I prioritized her mother’s medical care over syndicate business, and he mistook my gratitude for vulnerability. He believed the ruthless mafia boss had gone soft over a helpless woman.

I monitored the estate’s internal communications. At 2:00 AM on a Tuesday, an encrypted signal pinged from Lorenzo’s private quarters to a burner phone located in downtown Chicago.

“He’s distracted,” Lorenzo’s recorded voice spoke through my headset. “He brought the girl and the old woman into the house. He’s spending all his time with them. If we strike now, we can take the territory before he even realizes what hit him.”

“Is the girl important to him?” a gravelly voice replied on the other end—a voice I recognized instantly as Mateo Marcone, the son of the man who had tried to kill me fifteen years ago.

“She’s his heart now,” Lorenzo sneered. “We grab the girl and her mother, we force Rossi to sign over the docks and the distribution routes, and then we put a bullet in his head just like my father should have done fifteen years ago.”

I took off my headset and set it on the mahogany desk.

I didn't feel anger. I felt a cold, terrifying serenity. Lorenzo had betrayed my family. His father had helped orchestrate the crash that crippled Elena. And now, he was planning to use the two innocent women who represented everything good left in my world to tear down my empire.

I pulled a silver-plated Beretta from my desk drawer, checked the magazine, and racked the slide with a crisp, metallic snap.

They thought I had grown soft. They thought love made a man weak.

They were about to learn that a man fighting to protect the woman he loves is the most dangerous creature on God’s green earth.
