Chapter 10 - The Queen of Chicago

Six months later, spring had arrived in Chicago.

The lake breeze was warm, carrying the scent of blooming orchids and fresh grass across the estate grounds. The scars on the marble hall had been repaired, the estate refurnished, and my syndicate rebuilt—not on fear and betrayal, but on absolute loyalty and honor.

In the sunlit garden courtyard, Elena sat in her motorized chair, watching with a proud smile as two specialized physical therapists assisted her in standing. For the first time in fifteen years, with the help of revolutionary nerve-regeneration therapy funded by my estate, she took three shaky, independent steps forward.

Standing on the terrace above, watching her mother’s incredible progress, was Clara.

She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk dress that flowed down to her ankles, her dark hair pinned back with diamond clips. The tired, fearful maid who had hidden stale bread in a plastic container was gone forever. In her place stood a confident, radiant woman whose strength matched my own.

I walked up behind her, sliding my arms around her waist and pulling her back against my chest. She leaned into my warmth naturally, resting her head against my shoulder.

“Dr. Evans says she might be walking with a cane by winter,” Clara whispered, her voice filled with quiet wonder. “You gave her her life back, Dominic.”

“She gave me mine first,” I replied, turning her gently in my arms so she faced me.

I looked into her beautiful brown eyes, feeling a profound sense of peace that my millions, my power, and my territory had never been able to buy me.

I pulled a small velvet box from my jacket pocket, opening it to reveal a flawless solitaire diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly under the afternoon sun.

Clara gasped, her breath catching in her throat.

“I built an empire on blood and shadow, Clara,” I said, looking down at her with absolute devotion. “I trusted no one, loved no one, and believed the world was cold. But you walked into my life, carrying leftovers in a cracked container, and showed me what true bravery looks like. I don't want to run this city alone anymore. I want you by my side. As my wife. As my equal. As the queen of my heart.”

Tears of pure happiness overflowed from Clara’s eyes. She didn’t hesitate. She threw her arms around my neck, pulling my face down to hers.

“Yes,” she whispered against my lips. “A thousand times, yes.”

I pulled her close, kissing her deeply under the warm Chicago sun, while the applause of her mother echoed softly from the garden below.

The thief who stole food from my kitchen had ended up stealing my heart—and in doing so, she had saved my soul twice over.
