Chapter 3 - The Silver Ring

The atmosphere on the driveway shifted instantly from a quiet crime scene investigation into a tense, standoffish confrontation.
"Hold on right there, sir," Daniel commanded, raising a hand to stop the attorney in his tracks. "This is an active crime scene. Nobody approaches the child without my authorization."
Richard Sterling smoothed the lapels of his suit, his face a mask of cold, corporate efficiency. "I am not an intruder, Officer. I represent Miller Logistics and the personal estate of Arthur Miller. I received an automated security alert from the estate's private monitoring system forty minutes ago reporting a hazardous gas leak. I am here to take custody of Arthur’s daughter until her relatives can be notified."
"That's not how this works," Marcus stepped in, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Daniel. "Her parents were just rushed to the ICU in critical condition under suspicious circumstances. Child Protective Services has already been notified and is en route."
Sterling let out a quiet, condescending breath that smelled faint and sharp—a distinct mixture of tobacco and sour peppermint.
Daniel’s eyes flicked down to Sterling's thumb again. The signet ring bore an engraved crest: a dragon coiled around a broken sword.
"Mr. Sterling," Daniel said, his tone dropping an octave into his professional interrogation voice. "When was the last time you spoke with Arthur Miller?"
"Yesterday afternoon at his office downtown," Sterling replied without missing a beat. "Arthur was under immense stress. His logistics firm was facing involuntary bankruptcy proceedings. I was trying to help him restructure his corporate debt."
"Did that restructuring involve coming to his home late at night to demand he sign over his property?" Daniel pressed.
Sterling’s eyes hardened, a tiny muscle twitching beneath his jaw. "I have no idea what you're implying, Officer Price. Arthur’s company owed over four million dollars to private private equity creditors. He was desperate. If you're investigating a gas leak, I strongly suggest you look into Arthur himself. A desperate man facing ruin often considers desperate measures."
"Are you suggesting Arthur tried to kill his own family?" Marcus asked, incredulous.
"I am suggesting that financial ruin drives men to terrible acts," Sterling answered smoothly. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have a duty to secure Arthur's personal papers from the home before this scene is completely contaminated by fire crews."
"Nobody enters that house," Daniel stated firmly. "It is sealed under judicial warrant. And until CPS arrives, Lily stays right here in this vehicle under police protection."
Sterling stared at Daniel for five long seconds, a cold, calculating look passing through his eyes. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a gold-embossed business card, and flipped it onto the hood of the cruiser.
"My office will be in touch with your precinct chief by eight o'clock this morning, Officer Price," Sterling said quietly. "I suggest you check Arthur’s personal desk when your forensic team goes through. You might find a heavy life insurance policy signed less than seventy-two hours ago."
Without another word, Sterling turned on his heel, walked back to his black sedan, and sped off into the night.
Daniel picked up the business card from the hood.

"Did you catch that scent?" Marcus whispered beside him.
"Peppermint," Daniel gritted out. "And the ring. Lily wasn't hallucinating. Sterling was here last night."
"If Arthur was forced to sign a life insurance policy or a deed transfer under duress," Marcus realized, "then Arthur and Sarah weren't supposed to survive the night. And Sterling was supposed to inherit control of the estate."
Daniel walked back to the cruiser and looked at Lily. She was staring out the window at the black card in his hand, her face pale.

"That's him, isn't it, Lily?" Daniel asked softly. "The man with the ring?"
Lily nodded slowly, pulling the teddy bear against her face. "He told Daddy that if he didn't sleep forever, everyone would lose everything."
