Chapter 4 - The ICU Vigil

By 5:00 a.m., the sky over the city was beginning to bruise into a pale, gray twilight.
Saint Jude’s Hospital ICU floor was silent save for the rhythmic, mechanical hum of ventilators and the soft pinging of heart monitors.
Daniel sat in the waiting room chair, nursing a paper cup of lukewarm black coffee. A CPS caseworker named Eleanor Vance—a soft-spoken woman with silver hair who had worked alongside the department for fifteen years— sat next to Lily on the couch, watching as the young girl quietly drew pictures of pine trees with crayons on a pad of paper.
A heavy door swung open, and Dr. Aris Thorne stepped out into the waiting room, pulling his surgical cap off his head.
Daniel stood up instantly. "Doctor?"
"They're alive," Dr. Thorne said, rubbing his tired eyes. "Targeted hyperbaric oxygen therapy managed to flush the carbon monoxide and methane from their bloodstreams before fatal brain swelling occurred. But it was incredibly close, Officer. Another ten minutes in that room, and we would be talking about total brain death."
"Are they awake?" Daniel asked.
"Sarah is conscious, though very weak and confused," Thorne answered. "Arthur is still in a medically induced coma to manage his airway inflammation. You can speak with Sarah briefly, but only for five minutes."
Daniel turned to Eleanor. "Keep an eye on her."
"Always do, Daniel. Go," Eleanor replied warmly.
Daniel pushed through the double doors and walked down the sterile hallway to Room 412.
Sarah Miller lay in the center of the room, surrounded by IV stands and oxygen monitoring equipment. Her skin was ghastly pale, her lips cracked, but her eyes were open, staring blankly at the acoustic ceiling tiles.
When Daniel stepped up to the bedside, her head turned slowly toward him.
"Lily..." Sarah gasped, her voice sounding like dry paper rubbing together. "Where... where is my baby?"
"She’s right outside in the waiting room, Mrs. Miller," Daniel said gently, pulling up a plastic chair beside her. "She’s safe. She’s the one who called nine-one-one and saved your lives."
Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. "Thank God... oh, thank God..."
"Mrs. Miller, I need to ask you some tough questions," Daniel said, pulling out his notebook. "The fire department confirmed the gas leak was intentionally rigged. Someone tried to kill you and Arthur."
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped the bedsheet with shaking hands. "It was Richard... wasn't it?"
Daniel leaned forward. "Richard Sterling?"
"Arthur's company... Miller Logistics... was going under," Sarah whispered, her chest heaving. "Arthur borrowed two million dollars six months ago from a private investment firm that Sterling runs. But it wasn't a real firm, Officer. It was a predatory loan front. They kept adding hidden interest rates... thirty percent every month. Arthur couldn't pay."
"What happened yesterday?"
"Sterling came to our home," Sarah wept. "He brought two heavy security guards with him. He forced Arthur to sign over our home, our land, and a three-million-dollar corporate life insurance policy that listed Sterling's firm as the sole beneficiary. Sterling told Arthur that if he signed, the debt would be forgiven. But if he didn't... he said our family would suffer an 'unfortunate accident.'"
"Did Arthur sign it?" Daniel asked.
"He signed it," Sarah cried out. "He signed everything just to protect us! But Sterling lied! He was never going to let us live to challenge those contracts in court!"
Before Daniel could respond, the heart rate monitor beside Sarah's bed began to beep erratically. The digital screen spiked into high-voltage alarm codes.
CRITICAL ALERT: OXYGEN SATURATION DROPPING.
The door behind Daniel burst open, and two trauma nurses rushed inside.
"Officer, step back!" one nurse ordered, prepping a syringe. "She's going into respiratory distress!"
Daniel backed out into the hallway as the medical team swarmed the room. He stood in the corridor, his heart pounding, realization settling over him like a suffocating blanket.

Sterling didn't just want Arthur's money. He wanted to wipe the Miller family completely off the map so no one would ever be left to testify about the forged, extortionate contracts.
And Lily was the only surviving witness who had seen Sterling inside that house.
